MOTORSPORT: Hyundai announces F1 plans

Hyundai racer to make Albert Park debut

Okay so, we’ve been cheeky with our headline, but two Hyundais will be racing an F1 car this weekend at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix.

HMO Customer Racing’s Hyundai i30 N TCR car will compete against a road-going Hyundai i30 N and a V10 Cosworth-powered Minardi two-seater F1 car in the 2019 edition of the GP’s ever-popular Ultimate Speed Comparison.

The Hyundais and Minardi replace the stars of the three-way handicap race of recent years – equipment from storied brand, Mercedes-AMG.

The Hyundai TCR car will be driven by Nathan Morcom, while Hyundai “test pilot” and international rally driver Brendan Reeves will drive the road-going i30.

It is the i30 N racer’s first run in Australia in front of paying customers. The Hyundai will make its proper completion debut at the opening round of the TCR Australia 2019 series at Sydney Motorsport Park on May 17-19.

The Hyundais v F1 handicap race will be held four times over the Australian Grand Prix weekend.
