New McLaren boss, Zak Brown, has admitted he wants the car-maker to once again compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours.
The British supercar maker won the race back in 1995 with its McLaren F1 GTR.
"We have won Le Mans and the race is in our history and part of my job is to decide where McLaren brand should race", he told Brit mag, Autosport.
"Going back to Le Mans is something we have identified and are discussing.
"Personally, I would love to see us go to Le Mans, and I'm not the only one with those views".
It's now thought that Brown needs to win support from McLaren CEO, Mike Flewitt, before preparation for the Le Mans return can begin.
Instead of competing in top-flight LMP1 prototype class that the F1 GTR won, the British supercar maker will race in the lower GTE category.
That said, Brown told Autosport when asked if McLaren would ever consider entering a prototype racer "never say never”.
If it did compete in LMP1, McLaren would have to do battle with heavily financed teams fielded by Porsche, Toyota and Audi who have dominated the top category.
Once the Le Mans campaign is approved, Brown says the development of the GTE racer will be handled either in-house or handed over to McLaren GT – the independent company set up by the car-maker to create its current GT3 and GT4 racers.
