A remarkable set of motorsport collectables from Shell V-Power Racing team principal Ryan Story’s personal collection has been placed in an online auction, which is hoped to raise $200,000 for charity.
Included in the mix are a wide range of Dick Johnson Racing-centric Supercars items, plus an extensive array of Formula 1 pieces, focusing on Mark Webber, Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Jack Brabham, Jenson Button and Daniel Ricciardo.
All proceeds of the auction will be donated to The Ryan Story Worthy Causes Fund, specifically benefiting Camp Quality and the Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia.
For F1 fans, there is an original Mark Webber Jaguar race suit plus a Webber F3000 helmet, a replica Ayrton Senna helmet complete with a race-worn visor, and a replica Michael Schumacher helmet featuring an autographed tear-off.
Closer to home, the offering includes a wide range of DJR race suits and unique memorabilia items sourced from the team over time.
Also in the mix are numerous as-raced parts from both F1 and Supercars.
When asked by carsales to nominate his favourite piece, Story noted a clear favourite.
“The tyres and wheels from Scott McLaughlin's legendary pole lap at Bathurst in 2017 are very special,” he said.
“They are as they came off the car!
“It was the ultimate lap of Bathurst – he was greeted by his hero Greg Murphy as he came back into pit lane and it was quickly dubbed ‘The Lap of the Gods 2’ and deservedly so.
“2:03.8312… Something I’ll never forget. As he crossed the micro sector into Murrays before the start/finish line, we knew he’d cracked it and the feeling in the garage was like nothing I’d previously experienced.”
For Story, the opportunity to share the collection with the motorsport world simply made sense.
“Philanthropy has always been a passion of mine, but my time as an ambassador for Camp Quality and the Prostate Cancer Foundation has reaffirmed just how important giving back is,” he said.
“These organisations help ordinary Australians who are facing extraordinary circumstances and seeing first-hand the positive impact they have motivated me to launch the Ryan Story Worthy Causes Fund in 2023.
“When I launched the Worthy Causes Fund last year, I wanted to have a major fundraising effort annually in addition to my own contributions.
“I’ve kept a number of items that hold significant personal value and with a collection so large that it needs its own warehouse, why not auction the lot for charity!”
The auction is being co-ordinated by Donington Auctions, an Australian specialist in the classic automotive trade.
“For the dedicated Scott McLaughlin or Dick Johnson fan, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase some significant and historic memorabilia and artifacts, many of them unique,” said Donington Auctions director Cameron Sabine.
“Dr Story’s collection will also have broad appeal to Formula 1 enthusiasts too, with Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and our own Australian stars Daniel Ricciardo and Mark Webber among the names associated with an eclectic mix of Grand Prix auction items.”
The items can be viewed at the Donington Auctions website and the auction will run from Monday, June 17 until Sunday, June 30.
