MOTORSPORT: Replica Gulf Ford GT40 headlines Joondalup Sprint

A modern reinterpretation of a racing legend to lead star-studded entry list in Joondalup

The Joondalup Festival of Motoring will be graced by racing royalty this weekend, when a replica 1969 Le Mans Gulf Ford GT40 will be among the 150 vehicles entered for the CBD sprint event on Sunday.

Built in Cape Town by GT40 replica specialist Cape Advanced Vehicles (CAV), the stunning Gulf Oil liveried vehicle will be piloted by its owner and local CAV distributor, Paul Hewitt.

Lurking behind the cabin is a free-breathing 5.0-litre Ford ‘Coyote’ V8 fitted with an eight-stack injection system and Motec engine management system, which together yield close to 400kW – roughly 60kW more than the current Ford Mustang GT and all in a package that weighs considerably less than the production muscle car.

The bright blue and orange replica is just one of myriad other exotics set to take on the 2.4km street course on Sunday, with others including a Nissan GT-R NISMO, Audi R8 V10, Dodge Viper ACR, several Porsche 911 Cup cars, a replica Lancia 037, Alpine A110, RWB 1976 Porsche 911, Lancia Stratos, several classic Alfa Romeo GTVs, a Radical SR3 RSX, Ferrari 360 and a replica Ariel Atom.

Muscle car fans will be buoyed to hear plenty of icons including multiple Chevrolet Camaros, Ford Mustangs and Holden Toranas in various states of tune will be competing too, as will an army of modified and competition-spec Subaru WRXs and Mitsubishi Evos, Honda Civics and classic Minis.

If you want to see what else is competing, like the classic Porsche 911 Carrera RS and Safari duo, the full start sheet can be found on the festival website.

The sprint event will be run in conjunction with the ‘Automotive World’ motor show, which has so far garnered more than 500 display registrations, with more anticipated to be submitted over the coming days.

The Automotive World show will be broken into five regionally themed sectors, grouping vehicles together in accordance to their country or region of origin; Route 66 (US), Old Blighty (UK), the Continent (Europe), the Orient (Asia) and of course the land Down Under.

A more casual Cars and Cocktails meet will also be held onsite as organisers aim to attract motoring fans of every background and disposition.

The sprint event will get underway from 9:00am on Sunday, while the Automotive World displays will open an hour later at 10:00am.
