With an impressive 10th outright in 2007, a lot of gained interim knowledge and the burning of much midnight oil in preparation, Mazda heads into the 2008 Targa Tasmania with the hope of an even better placing this year.
The 2008 assault by Mazda will involve two Mazda3 MPS models to be driven by last year's 10th placegetter Rick Bates and rally luminary Alister McRae.
Running in the 2WD showroom class, the two MPS Mazdas are seen to have a good chance of a podium finish this year. Mazda Motorsport chief Allan Horsley says the Mazda3 MPS is a formidable competitor on the 2000km Targa that is quicker in a lot of places than some 4WD cars -- even in wet conditions.
The two Mazda3s don't vary significantly from regular showroom cars, with only things like tyres, springs and shock absorbers, engine ECUs, brake pads and exhaust mufflers changed for the event.
The cars will also be fitted with special roll cages, seats, belts and steering wheels, but will otherwise be pretty standard including full interior trim, audio system and power windows. The engine, gearbox and differential are also standard.
Rick Bates says last year's experiences will benefit the team greatly this year. "The team learnt a lot from last year's event," says Bates. "With one Targa in the Mazda3 MPS under our belts we're all a lot more educated in terms of vehicle preparation and conservation during the event."
2008 will be Mazda's eight appearance at Targa Tasmania, and the sixth time McCrae has faced the start.
Targa Tasmania starts on April 15 and finishes on April 20.
