McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has paid a fitting tribute to its outgoing 675LT supercar with a faster, more powerful version of both the coupe and Spider exclusively for one of its wealthy customers.
Named the MSO R, under the skin, both the coupe and drop-top are technically identical to the 675LT which was recently replaced by the 720S.
Thus, instead of being powered by the 720S' 4.0-litre engine, the McLaren MSO R gets an up-rated version of the twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8.
Unleashing 506kW, the MSO R's specially tuned engine produces 10kW more than a standard 675LT.
McLaren says the power gains come from a Formula 1-style blueprinting of the 3.8-litre powerplant which reduces the engineering tolerances of all parts to ensure maximum efficiency.
The M838TL V8 also gets hand polished exhaust ports and a full titanium exhaust system.
Drive is via the standard seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, but MSO hasn't released any specific performance figures for the MSO R.
Enhancing high-speed track performance, the R runs its own aero package including front dive planes and a huge rear wing.
Both MSO R's come with the optional Visual Carbonfibre Pack.
To reduce weight, both cars sit on ultra-lightweight five-spoke alloy wheels.
Inside, the dash is wrapped with black Alcantara, while the near competition-spec bucket seats are covered with red leather.
McLaren has refused to release pricing for the limited two-run MSO Rs.
The British car maker's bespoke division is already rumoured to be creating wilder, more individual versions of the current 720S - said to be more racial than the bright pink example unveiled in August at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.
