The inaugural Brisbane Motor Show auction and the upcoming Shannons auction in Sydney could be a useful gauge of on-going public interest in muscle cars.
With the XY GT HO Phase III fetching silly money -- and that's to put it mildly -- buyers may begin to focus on more affordable cars with histories no less illustrious.
Is it the worldwide economic downturn or is it that market for these cars has begun to dry up, now that those with the whim and the disposable income have already secured the car of their dreams? We'll never know for sure, but the forthcoming Shannons auction in Sydney may provide a clue.
Shannons has both an XR Falcon GT and a Monaro GTS HK with 307 CID V8 lotted for the Sydney auction. Similar examples of the cars were sold at the recent Brisbane Motor Show auction for $81,000 (Falcon) and previously, at the Melbourne Spring auction for $70,000 (Monaro).
If these figures match the final bids for the Sydney lots, it could be a sign that the Australian public's infatuation with muscle cars is, if not ending, at least reaching a plateau.
Shannons will have a Pepper Red XA GT Falcon sedan and an XY GS 302 V8 sedan ready for the Sydney auction. Holden fans will be able to bid on an A9X Torana sedan, unrestored and in Flamenco Red.
Muscle cars from across the Pacific will include three Corvettes and a Mustang Convertible.
The Sydney auction is scheduled to take place February 18.
