Events marking the occasion of the Ford Mustang's 50th anniversary are reaching fever pitch in the US – particularly as the official on-sale date for the new 2015 model draws closer.
The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is joining the throng too, with its 'Mustang Madness' weekend scheduled for May 3 and 4. There'll be plenty of hoopla – for those who happen to be in town that weekend – and a local Ford dealer has got right behind it, with product experts present to answer questions concerning the new model at the 'all-Mustang' show. Organisers promise visitors will get to see the new model before its official release, and guided tours throughout the facility will offer the opportunity each hour to see the different iterations of the Mustang down through the years. Activities will include live interviews with 'Mustang Heroes', food stalls, live music, and a play area and scavenger hunt for kids.
A particular drawcard for the locals will be champion drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr, present on the Saturday at 10am to sign autographs. Historic or iconic Mustangs appearing will include custom cars (such as the Martini-liveried T-5R Mustang project), the very first Mustang to roll off the production line and 'Eleanor' from each of the 'Gone in 60 Seconds' films.
The Ford dealer supporting the event – Galpin Ford – will be the starting point for a 'rally drive' to the museum, open to Mustangs of all vintages. Judges will award entries three cash prizes, including $500 for People's Choice Best in Show.
Serious Mustang collectors are welcome to attend a 'Value of the Mustang' seminar conducted on the Sunday afternoon at 2pm by Hagerty Collector Car Insurance. And once the spirit begins to flag, there's a Mustang Lounge on the roof, offering live music and a burger buffet for $25 admission.
It's a long way to go for a weekend, but if you're a Mustang buff and you've already made arrangements to be on the west coast for that weekend anyway, why not visit the website ahead of the event to purchase tickets?
