MX-5 tops 800K

Mazda's little roadster that could has just passed another milestone

Mazda's celebrated its 800,000th MX-5 roadster produced last month. The two-door rolled off the company's Hiroshima production line on January 30.

Production of the landmark soft-top was commenced in April 1989. The 800,000 milestone took 17 years and nine months.

The MX-5 was certified as the world's top selling sportscar by Guinness World Records when production reached 531,890 units in May 2000. Now that cumulative production has topped 800,000 units, Mazda says it is applying to have the record updated.
