The Nissan Navara was one of the untold success stories of last year, when it placed second in sales to the Toyota HiLux in the pick-up and cab chassis 4x4 segment.
Granted, it was over 5000 sales for the year behind the HiLux, but without the plethora of variants Toyota can offer.
The demand for the Navara 4x4 last year has encouraged Nissan to reintroduce the old D22 series Navara, as a price leader in both the 4x4 and 4x2 segments.
Nissan had dropped the D22 range, as the 3.0-litre turbodiesel fitted to it didn't comply with upcoming emissions legislation, but now, after the best part of a year without a 4x2 contender to pursue HiLux in the sales race, Nissan is reintroducing the D22 model with the same 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine fitted to the D40 model (more here).
Both dual cab and single cab variants of the D22 Navara will be available.
The YD25 engine will drive through a standard five-speed manual transmission to either the rear wheels (in a single cab body style only), or all four wheels.
Peak power from the common-rail DOHC engine is 98kW, occurring at 3600rpm and maximum torque of 304Nm is produced from 2000rpm.
Fuel consumption is 7.3L/100km for the 4x2 model, or 9.1L/100km for the 4x4 single cab. The 4x4 dual cab variant achieves 9.2L/100km. With the new engine fitted, the D22 models can be identified from earlier Navaras by the bonnet scoop which ducts air to the intercooler.
Standard equipment for the 4x2 model comprises: power steering, single in-dash CD player, air conditioning, dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes. Price for this variant is $22,490.
The DX grade single cab 4x4 comes equipped with power steering, air conditioning, single in-dash CD player and 16-inch steel wheels. Dual front airbags and front seatbelt pretensioners are available to order as a $500 option. Price for the DX single cab 4x4 is $30,690.
The one grade of dual cab 4x4 is the ST-R, priced at $38,490 and fitted as standard with dual front airbags with anti-lock brakes, an alloy sports bar, side steps, front bucket seats and 16-inch alloy wheels.
Boosting the D40 Navara's appeal in the 4x4 segment, Nissan is releasing a limited edition model at the Brisbane Motor Show.
Named the Navara Outlaw, the limited volume model comes with the YD25 turbodiesel engine and is based on the high-grade ST-X. Additional features include 17-inch alloys, chrome running boards, chrome bonnet protector, alloy nudge bar, fog lights, Bluetooth connectivity, an MP3-compatible six-disc CD audio system with auxiliary input jack, a soft tonneau and an Outlaw decal.
Priced at $47,990 for the six-speed manual, the Navara Outlaw is $2000 over the retail price of the standard vehicle and can be ordered with the optional five-speed automatic transmission for an extra $2000. Two colours are available: red or black.
Both the Nissan Outlaw and the D22 models are to make their debut at the Brisbane Motor Show from February 2nd.
