New 2022 Nissan X-TRAIL launch locked in

Vital new mid-size SUV to join Nissan’s big 2022 launch program after QASHQAI, Z and Pathfinder

Nissan Australia has locked in a late-2022 showroom arrival for its new-generation Nissan X-TRAIL.

Other key details like pricing, variant line-up and specification are still to be announced for the all-new fourth-generation 2022 Nissan X-TRAIL, which was unveiled overseas in April last year

It was also previewed by the closely-related US-market Nissan Rogue that emerged back in June 2020.

Riding on a new platform and set to offer a hybrid powertrain option for the first time, the new Nissan X-TRAIL’s mechanicals have also been shown with its platform twin, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, with the main differences expected to be limited to exterior styling, cabin design and local spec details.

Nissan is promising the new X-TRAIL will offer higher levels of safety, enhanced capability and an altogether better driving experience than the current ageing model.

“The Nissan X-TRAIL has been a family favourite in Australia for more than 20 years, with more than 270,000 vehicles sold since its launch here in 2001,” said Nissan Australia managing director Adam Paterson.

“That’s an impressive legacy to protect, and it’s one we take very seriously.

“Which is why the all-new X-TRAIL introduces a bold new look, incredible technology and safety features, and even more capability, all while still sticking true to its heritage of unlocking fun and adventure for Australian families.”

Part of this enhanced capability will be a new ‘intelligent’ all-wheel drive system, which Nissan says reacts faster thanks to a ‘direct coupling’ between the front and rear axles.

Hill descent control and up to five driving modes will also be on hand.

Helping keep occupants and other road users safe will be the ‘Nissan Intelligent Mobility’ suite and ProPILOT semi-autonomous driving aids, along with LED headlights, a head-up display and all the usual safety acronyms.

“More detailed specification will be revealed closer to its official launch,” a Nissan Australia spokesperson said in a statement.

The new X-TRAIL will cap off a big year of model launches for Nissan, with other new metal on the horizon including the new Nissan Z sports car and two other crucial SUVs – the new Nissan QASHQAI and Pathfinder.
