New 2023 Nio ET5 Touring revealed

Chinese brand launches wagon version of Nio ET5 mid-size sedan that’s primed to rival BMW i5

Chinese prestige brand Nio has launched the all-new 2023 Nio ET5 Touring that will line up against premium battery-electric wagons such as the incoming BMW i5 Touring.

Standing alongside the 2023 Nio ET5 mid-size sedan, which carsales drove in Shanghai earlier this year, the Nio ET5 Touring is a strong chance to be offered in Australia as part of the Chinese car-maker’s planned launch here in the next few years.

Based on Nio’s latest Technology Platform 2.0, which also underpins the ET5 sedan and other key models including the Nio ES6 mid-size SUV we’ve just driven too, the ET5 Touring measures 4790mm long, 1960mm wide and stands 1499mm tall.

It also has a generous 2888mm wheelbase.

New for the ET5 Touring is a large 1.35sq-m one-piece sunroof that features dimming tech and can filter out a claimed 99.99 per cent of harmful UV rays.

Up front, the cabin is virtually identical to the sedan, featuring a huge 12.8-inch infotainment screen and a second 10.2-inch digital instrument panel.

Like other Nio EVs, the latest model comes with the car-maker’s Nomi personal assistant that is integrated on top of the dash.

The fastest ET5 models come equipped with a dual-motor powertrain that mounts a 150kW e-motor on the front axle and a larger 210kW unit at the rear.

Combined, the e-motors produce 360kW and 705Nm of torque, which is enough for a rapid 0-100km/h sprint of just 4.0 seconds.

Two battery options are available, 75kWh and 100kWh, with the former offering a driving range of up to 435km and the latter extending this to 558km claimed.

In some markets such as Norway and Germany, Nio has confirmed it will roll out its novel battery-swapping stations that can replace your depleted cells in just five minutes.

As part of the deal, owners get two free battery swaps a month and up to 200kW of free charging.

Nio says 70 battery swap stations will be introduced in Europe by the end of 2023.

Using a DC fast-charger, Nio claims that a 10-80 per cent top-up takes 30-40 minutes.
