New 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport released

Sports-themed light SUV arrives Down Under promising a sportier experience

Toyota Australia’s expansion of the GR Sport portfolio has seen another variant added to the local ranks in the form of the 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport.

Priced from $35,840 plus on-road costs and offered exclusively in two-wheel drive hybrid form, the new Yaris Cross variant has been gifted the same sporty makeover as the rest of the tracksuit-wearing GR Sport portfolio, including a unique black grille mesh, red brake callipers, black mirror caps, custom rear diffuser, bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels and plenty of exterior GR logos.

The sports theme continues inside with an all-black colourway, more aggressively contoured front seats, suede-like and leatherette upholstery, more GR logos, contrast stitching and aluminium pedals.

As with most GR Sport products, the sporty cosmetics are matched by a more focused chassis set-up consisting of firmer and lower (-10mm) springs, revised front lower control arms and additional underbody bracing.

Toyota says the end result is improved body control, elevated cornering dynamics and enhanced steering feel, in part thanks to superior Falken FK510 rubber fitted as standard.

The GR Sport uses the Yaris Cross GXL 2WD hybrid as its basis for the athletic makeover and carries with it a $3850 price premium – enough to make it the second most expensive variant in the line-up.

Standard Yaris Cross equipment highlights include LED headlights, a leather-accented steering wheel, 7.0-inch multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite-navigation, a panoramic view monitor, Toyota Connected Services and an extra front USB-C port.

Toyota Australia sales, marketing and franchise operations vice president Sean Hanley said the Yaris Cross GR Sport embodied Toyota’s desire to launch exciting, driver-focused products in the market.

“Vehicles like the Yaris Cross GR Sport offer customers a sporty aesthetic and a more dynamic focus on driving characteristics reaffirming Toyota’s commitment to delivering ever better cars that are as exciting to drive as they look,” he said.

No changes have been made to the 1.5-litre three-cylinder hybrid drivetrain, which continues to send a combined 85kW to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
