Fresh images of the incoming 2024 MINI Cooper Electric have been released that reveal the new-generation battery-powered hatchback’s minimalist interior.
Set for an international launch in May next year, the new EV hatch will be built in China on a platform developed by parent BMW in collaboration with Great Wall Motors (GWM).
This architecture is already employed by the GWM Ora hatch offered in Australia, while combustion-engined versions of the new MINI hatch will also continue with a derivative of the current platform and production out of the UK.
What you see here is the Chinese-built EV, which draws inspiration from the original Mini sedan that dates back to 1957.
A posting on Instagram which blends old with new shows how the next MINI will once again come with a cabin dominated by a round 9.4-inch-wide OLED circular screen, although this time there will be no separate binnacle for the instrument cluster.
The new system will run BMW’s OS9 operating system that will allow owners to select different themes for the screen and also change the ambient interior lighting.
Below the circular infotainment screen that displays the speedo, navigation, audio settings and phone status is a separate row of controls that includes a toggle-like gear selector and shortcuts for the climate control.
A touch-sensitive bar is also provided for commonly used functions such as air recirculation and hazard lights.
Instead of a traditional speedo, ahead of the driver is a neat 3D head-up display.
The dash itself looks like it is wrapped in a new fabric material that incorporates an embedded ambient light source.
Leather will be banned, replaced by vegan-friendly sustainable materials.
The simple design extends to the door cards, although the new three-spoke steering wheel features multiple buttons to help reduce driver distraction on the move.
At launch, there will be two versions of the new 2024 MINI Electric – one with 135kW and another with 160kW. A dual-motor JCW model is expected to follow, producing at least 300kW.
The MINI EV hatch will draw energy from either a 40kWh or 54kWh battery, providing a range of 300-400km.
From earlier leaks, we also know that MINI plans to evolve its next-generation hatch, which will keep classic styling cues such as its oval-shaped lamps and wide body with short front and rear overhangs.
The new Cooper EV will be joined by the next-generation MINI Countryman SUV that will also come with an EV powertrain option for the first time.
In 2025, the all-electric MINI Aceman SUV will arrive that will be an indirect replacement for the Clubman.
