The all-electric 2024 Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer has been teased ahead of its official unveiling “in the coming months”, revealing the big wagon’s rakish silhouette for the first time.
Wrapped in camouflage that’s said to picture an ‘Indian Summer’, the ID.7 Tourer is a more spacious take on the ID.7 sedan launched earlier this year.
The wagon rides on the same MEB dedicated platform that’s also shared with the smaller VW ID.3 hatch and the ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs, but with a longer wheelbase it offers up to 545 litres of luggage space.
This expands to 1714 litres when the rear seats are stowed.
Both of those figures are bettered by the combustion-powered new-generation Volkswagen Passat – which is not coming to Australia – that can swallow 690 litres (seats up) and a far more capacious 1920L with the rear seats folded.
The battery-powered wagon comes with the same wind-cheating aerodynamic treatment as the sedan to maximise efficiency and boost range. With a large rear tailgate spoiler also included, the wagon’s drag coefficient is just 0.24Cd, not far off the incredible 0.23Cd claimed for the sedan.
That means with the biggest 86kWh lithium-ion battery fitted, the ID.7 Tourer should boast a driving range of up to 700km, matching the sedan.
Driven by a rear-mounted APP550 motor, the entry-level ID.7 Tourer will come with around 210kW and 545Nm of torque and be combined with a smaller 77kWh battery.
Running a 400-volt electrical system, the ID.7 Pro charges at 22kW AC or up to 170kW on a DC fast-charger, while the later-arriving 86kWh battery in the ID.7 Pro S will charge at up to 200kW.
The fastest GTX versions will boast a 250kW dual-motor powertrain that will see the big wagon sprint from 0-100km/h in just 6.0 seconds.
Helping speed up charging, the ID.7 will feature a new pre-condition feature that heats or cools the battery on approach to a charger when the driver sets the sat-nav to a charging station.
Full details of the ID.7 are still to be released, but the wagon is expected to measure 5000mm long, 1862mm wide and stand 1538mm tall. A 2966mm wheelbase should also help offer limousine-like legroom in the second row.
New tech offered will include Volkswagen’s Level 2+ Travel Assist semi-autonomous cruise control that features auto lane change.
The big wagon will also self-park, even without occupants onboard, with the driver able to use a smartphone app.
Inside, there’s a new smart climate control system with active vents, a large head-up display and a big 15.0-inch infotainment system.
Other new tech includes massage seats that feature 10 air cushions in the base and backrest, with 14-way adjustment.
A powerful 14-speaker 700W Harman Kardon sound system will be optional.
The latest member of Volkswagen’s ID family will be pitched as a rival for both the Tesla Model 3 and other EVs like the Hyundai IONIQ 6, although in Europe the ID.7 Pro sedan has been priced from €56,995 ($A94,865), making it considerably more expensive than the IONIQ 6 range that kicks off from $74,000 (plus on-roads) in Australia.
