Volkswagen has pulled the drapes off its all-new 2027 Volkswagen ID. EVERY1, previewing a production small EV that will be on sale in two years’ time priced from less than €20,000 ($A34,000).
Created to replace the old VW Up that was sold briefly in Australia (2011-2014), the new Volkswagen ID. EVERY1 will be the firm’s first rung of its EV ladder and the most affordable electric car it makes.
Based on a modified version of the Volkswagen Group front-wheel drive MEB Entry platform, the new ID. EVERY1 will share plenty with the more expensive ID.2 that goes on sale next year priced from €25,000 ($A43,000).
The difference compared to its larger brother, is the production ID. EVERY1 gets a shorter wheelbase, smaller and less energy-dense batteries and a different rear axle that is derived from the current Polo.
Other changes include a new and more efficient electric motor that produces 70kW but sees top speed limited to 130km/h.
Combined with a new battery of undisclosed size or chemistry, the new ID. EVERY1 should be capable of covering up to 250km on a single charge.
New tech adopted by the ID. EVERY1 includes an entirely new software architecture that has been developed as part of a joint venture with US EV ute- and SUV-maker, Rivian.
Said to evolve the Volkswagen Up’s styling, the ID. EVERY1 is said to possess a “slightly cheeky” smiling bumper and human-eye-replicating headlights and taillights.
The new lights can display an animated hello or goodbye sequence mirroring what more expensive models do, while the ID. EVERY 1’s face is combined with large (for its size) 19-inch alloy wheels and illuminated front and rear badges.
Measuring in at 3800mm long, 1816mm wide and 1490mm tall, the ID. EVERY1 is around 280mm shorter than a Polo but 250mm longer than the Up it replaces.
When it comes to luggage space, there’s up to 305 litre of space – 45L less than the Polo.
Inside, there are lots of fabrics made of recycled materials and an unusual “terrazo-like mottled” textured surface that’s said to provide a light and modern look.
Ahead of the driver is a slim horizontal digital instrument cluster that is combined with a larger central touch-screen.
Below the infotainment is a row of physical shortcut buttons for the volume and temperature control.
The two-spoke steering wheel also drops the capacitive buttons for a set of proper buttons.
Ahead of the passenger is a rail to mount a tablet or shelf, plus a centre console that can slide rearwards on a rail that features yet more shelves that can be pulled out.
More fun additions include a removeable small Bluetooth speaker between the driver and passenger pews, plus the ability to fold flat all seats (bar the driver’s) to create a bed to sleep on while charging.
“The ID. EVERY1 is the last piece of the puzzle on our journey to having the widest model selection in the volume segment,” said Volkswagen boss, Thomas Schäfer.
“We will then offer every customer the right car with the right drive system – including affordable entry-level all-electric mobility.”
Unconfirmed for Australia, when it arrives the production version of the Volkswagen ID. EVERY1 will rival EVs like the BYD Dolphin, GWM Ora and the MG4.
Unlike the original Volkswagen Up, that spun-off Skoda and SEAT versions, VW insiders have already revealed that currently there are no plans for replacements for the Skoda Citigo or SEAT Mii, at least from launch.
Volkswagen has announced that from now until 2027 it will roll out nine new models, that includes the production version of the ID. EVERY1 (2027) and the ID.2.
The next EV scheduled to be unwrapped will be the ID.2 X SUV at September’s Munich motor show.
