New 500kW Tesla Supercharger V4 locked-in for 2025

Tesla has announced it will unlock the full capability of its next-generation V4 Superchargers in 2025, allowing for ultra-fast-charging of up to 500kW for EVs and 1.2MW refills for the Tesla Semi trucks.

Tesla said it first began rolling out the V4 chargers in Europe and limited locations in the US last year but limited the hardware to 250kW.

The updated V4 chargers are said to include physical payment terminals, longer cords and CCS connectors, with each cabinet able to power up to eight stalls each.

EV owners with 800-volt vehicles – Porsche, Hyundai and Kia primarily – are set to benefit the most from the new chargers seeing as the V4 cabinets will be able to support vehicles with electrical architectures ranging from 400V to 1000V.

This is significant because most public chargers max-out at 480V; little more than half the potential of some key models like the Macan, IONIQ 5 and EV6.

In the US, Tesla is promising owners of Cybertrucks will benefit from 30 per cent quicker battery refills, although owners of the 400V Tesla Model 3 and Model Y will still be limited to top-ups of just 250kW.

Tesla has not confirmed when or if Australians will be able to take advantage of the high-voltage charging.
