New ads to help drive 1 million EVs onto Aussie roads

Electric Vehicle Council ad campaign has all-star cast in bid to get 1m EVs onto our roads by 2027

The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) has launched a new national advertising campaign as part of its goal to have one million EVs on Aussie roads by 2027.

Featuring the tagline “my next car will be…”, the ads are designed to showcase the strengths and versatility of EVs in a variety of environments and driving situations, from sheer performance through to rugged capability.

The first full-length ad was released yesterday featuring a Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6, LDV eT60, Genesis GV60, BMW iX, Nissan LEAF, Audi e-tron GT and Polestar 2 – an all-star cast representing the broad range of market segments in which EVs are now represented.

The Porsche Taycan is, naturally, used to showcase the immense performance capabilities of EVs, while others like the BMW iX and Genesis GV60 are included as examples of new-age cabin technology.

The IONIQ 5 is the supermodel of the minute-long clip, with its Kia EV6 cousin cast as the practical one powering a couple’s romantic rural escape via its vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities.

This camping scene also features a dig at former prime minister Scott Morrison, where an interested onlookers to the EV6 says: “Hey Scottie, I thought you said these EVs were gonna ruin the weekend…”

That’s a direct reference to Morrison’s comments in 2019 that cast doubt over the practicality of EVs for long-distance driving and recreational pursuits.

The Nissan LEAF also gets a special mention for its bi-directional charging capabilities, while other EVs make cameo appearances in accordance with the myriad endings to the ‘my next car will be…’ phrase.

EVC chief executive Behyad Jafari said an increasing number of Aussies are looking to make the switch to an EV, and the more they understand the benefits, the more likely they are to follow through.

“The ads call on Australians to get behind the push to have a million EVs on Australian roads by 2027, which coincides with the federal government’s plan to introduce strong fuel efficiency standards,” he said.

“We need to incentivise car-makers to make their best range of EVs available to Australians, so that Australian consumers have the same choice as drivers in the United States or Europe.”

The full-length advert can be seen on YouTube, with shorter versions set to appear across most forms of digital media.
