New Astra launches in the EU

The new five-door hatch has just gone on sale in the UK, where the Vauxhall badged Astra has been one of the most popular small cars for the best part of three decades.
The Holden Astra first appeared in Australia in August 1984 as the LB model, and survived until August 31 2009, when imports of the model ceased.
The new design gives the Astra a fresh new look and compared to the last models offered in Australia, the Astra AH, it has a smoother, more sophisticated aesthetic.
All models sold in the UK get stability control, six airbags and electric windows, heated mirrors, air-conditioning and a CD stereo with MP3 playback as standard. Signalling the Astra's upmarket push, optional extras include adaptive forward lighting and FlexRide adjustable suspension.
A range of new engines, petrol and diesel, will give the new Astra range a variety of power and economy, with the range topping petrol powered 1.6-litre turbo outputting 132kW and the 2.0-litre turbodiesel 118kW.
The Astra is unlikely to ever find its way back to Australia, with the Holden Cruze having taken over the small car mantle for the local car manufacturer.
