The annual Shannons Targa Rallysprint series held in Western Australia will take on extra significance with a new backer, Axis Hire, a local heavy vehicle and earth moving equipment hire company, joining for the first event in the series on Thursday November 2.
Axis Hire proprietor Mark Cates, who drove his Ferrari 488 Spider in the previous two Targa Rallysprint events, said the series is an opportunity for owners of exotic cars to put some track time together to hone driving skills without compromising outside time commitments.
The Rallysprint series is run over six events between November and June, with five of the events held in the evenings at the Perth Motorplex. The 3.25km course is negotiated four times during each event, and alternates between clockwise and anti-clockwise from month to month.
“I reckon everyone who owns an exotic car should get their pampered cars out of the garage and onto the track – it’s so much fun,” Mr Cates said.
Ross Tapper, Rallysprint event director, said the series is a good opportunity to develop teamwork between drivers and the co-drivers.
“Drivers will need to negotiate obstacles in close vicinity of the road with the help of their co-driver whilst racing the clock, which is quite different to simply racing around on a race track," he said.
The Shannons Targa Rallysprint series is designed to cater for drivers with a wide-range of skill and experience, from novice through to those preparing for the WA’s premier tarmac event, Targa West.
Entry requirements are straightforward: All that is necessary is a car which meets the required safety standards covering brakes, tyres, seatbelts and fire extinguishers, and that both driver and co-driver hold a CAMS L2S licence plus a car club membership available from Targa West Events.
Entries in the series are limited to 80 cars.
Also supporting the Shannons Targa Rallysprint Series are Quit message promoter Healthway, Autopro Canning Vale, Perth Motorsport Tyres and STechnic Specialist Subaru Garage.
