Just hours after the 2022 BMW M3 Touring made its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, BMW M has announced that its first-ever fast 3 Series wagon will also be the next MotoGP safety car.
Previewing a host of new upgrades from the BMW M Performance catalogue, the BMW M3 Touring safety car bags a new carbon-fibre splitter and pair of racy canards mounted to either side of the front bumper.
At the rear, the MotoGP safety car also gains the optional sports exhaust that features diagonal stacked pipes with a carbon-fibre rear diffuser.
All are expected to be available when the BMW M3 wagon finally touches down in Australia in the first quarter of 2023.
Despite being designed to boost performance, there’s no claim of any improvement over the standard 375kW/650Nm 3.0-litre inline turbo six-cylinder engine.
So even with the go-faster parts added, there will be no improvement over the 0-100km/h sprint of 3.6 seconds and the 12.9sec sprint from 0-200km/h.
In fact, the M3 safety wagon is expected to be slightly slower than road-going versions as it’s equipped with heavier roll cage, fire suppression system and roof and grille-mounted light bars.
Painted in BMW M’s traditional colours that commemorate its 50th anniversary, the M3 MotoGP safety car’s first outing will be at Silverstone’s British GP in August.
When the road-going BMW M3 Touring arrives Down Under, Australia along with Germany and the UK are set to be among the fast wagon’s biggest markets following the decision to not offer the family-friendly M3 in China or the US.
Both pricing and full specification of the Australian-spec M3 Touring will be released closer to its arrival.
