The rear-end of what’s thought to be the upcoming 2024 BMW M5 has been leaked on Instagram months ahead of the new-generation super-sedan’s expected global reveal, showcasing a minimalist but aggressive new look for the flagship of the new BMW 5 Series range.
Not due to be revealed until early next year, the new BMW M5’s rear-end design can be seen in a single image posted by @imran_arshad, revealing a huge double-bubble rear diffuser set-up with each element containing a pair of purposeful big-bore exhaust outlets.
The black elements are matched by a subtle black lip spoiler atop the boot lid and corresponding black M Performance alloy wheels shod with what look like Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres.
Squint really hard and you might be able to see the chromed M badge above the right tail-light cluster and, while we can’t see what number the prefix is attached to, it’s pretty much a forgone conclusion to read ‘M5’.
Other design details of note include the chiselled side elements of the rear bumper, which will no doubt aid aerodynamics in some manner, a pair of tail-lights and a rather striking royal blue paint colour.
We’ve seen plenty of unofficial shots of the new G90-series BMW M5 over the past 18 months or so, courtesy of European spy images that shown the next-gen Mercedes-AMG E 63 S rival will adopt a sleeker silhouette than previous iterations, with a long and low profile that should be good for a top speed of more than 300km/h.
Drive is expected to come courtesy of the twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 plug-in hybrid system as seen in the latest BMW XM Label Red hyper-SUV, which cranks out a combined 560kW of power and 1000Nm of torque.
Both these outputs are rumoured to be bettered by the M5 – probably in Competition or CS form – but the sedan’s lower weight and more compact dimensions should hand it a stark performance edge over BMW’s outright flagship.
What’s interesting so far is that BMW has only teased the M5 Touring as opposed to the sedan, despite the latter body style typically being the first to debut.
M fans around the world have been drooling at the prospect of a return of the five-door M5 for almost a year now, since BMW’s CEO told loyal followers to “keep your eyes open” in October 2022, following confirmation the flying five-door was in development back in late June.
A quick look at the Touring’s rear-end shows a camouflaged version of the same diffuser-heavy rear bumper, effectively confirming the sedan in this leaked image as the new M5 – just in case the referenced badgework wasn’t enough.
