New BYD Sealion 6 PHEV variant gets battery boost

New variant packs a bigger battery, longer EV range and claimed class-leading efficiency for under $50K

BYD has expanded its Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV range in Australia with the introduction of a new Dynamic Extended Range variant, which is priced at $46,990, a $1000 premium over the Sealion 6 Standard Range vehicle.

The updated model brings a significantly larger 26.6kWh Blade Battery – up from 18.3kWh in the standard Sealion 6 – enabling a claimed 140km of electric-only range (NEDC), which is up from 90km.

Combined fuel consumption is claimed at 1.1L/100km, provided the battery is kept sufficiently charged. BYD says this sets a new benchmark in the mid-size SUV class, undercutting the efficiency of its rivals.

Priced from $46,990 plus on-road costs (ORCs), the new variant is available now and built exclusively in Dynamic trim, sitting above the entry-level $42,990 Sealion 6 Essential.

It continues to utilise BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system with no changes to engine or motor outputs, maintaining its 160kW/300Nm combined output from its single petrol and electric motors.

While the mechanical package remains unchanged, the real benefit of the larger battery is more EV-only driving, making it ideal for urban commuters wanting to minimise petrol use without range anxiety.

“This is about giving customers more choice,” said BYD Australia’s Head of Product, Sajid Hasan. “There’s a growing demand for electrified vehicles with meaningful electric range, and the Dynamic Extended Range variant hits that sweet spot. If demand grows, we’ll consider further variants.”

With a projected 1092km combined driving range (WLTP) and competitive pricing, the extended-range Sealion 6 could appeal to buyers weighing up the new Toyota RAV4 PHEV or Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV alternatives.

It’s also another step in BYD’s broader push to offer diverse electrified solutions as its Australian sales surge past 40,000 units since launch.

As BYD continues its aggressive local expansion – bringing in models like the Sealion 7, Sealion 8, Shark 6 ute and Denza luxury SUVs – the Sealion 6 Dynamic Extended Range offers a compelling middle ground for buyers not quite ready to go fully electric, but who want to dramatically reduce fuel use and emissions.
