New car sales up in September
VFACTs shows modest monthly growth on back of better supply but YTD still downAustralia new car registrations were up again in September off the back of increased supply to carmakers as the international industry continues its recovery from the natural disasters in Japan in early 2011.
According to figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) today, sales of new motor vehicles in Australia grew "strongly" in September. Official VFACTS data for the month shows 86,819 new vehicles were registered. This is an increase of 2.1 per cent (1765 vehicles) over the same month in 2010.
Year-to-date registrations remain down on 2010, however... To the end of September 752,128 new vehicles have been registered, 3.7 per cent fewer than for the same period in 2010.
Via FCAI's new release, new FCAI chief executive Ian Chalmers said "two consecutive months of strong growth signalled a recovery in sales from Japanese manufacturers now that supply from the earthquake and tsunami affected area was beginning to stabilise".
He stated the FCAI remained "firm" in its projections that new vehicle registrations for 2011 would top one-million.
"Reduced sales in the second quarter of 2011 have set a challenging target for the final three months of the year, but industry resolve is high," Chalmers stated.
"Sales stimulus by means of competition in the marketplace saw the third quarter end strongly, and we are now looking toward continued growth through to the end of the year," he said.
FCAI reports sales of locally manufactured vehicles grew "significantly" in September, increasing more than 21 per cent over the same month in 2010.
Toyota's Corolla was the single best selling model in September with 3766 sales, followed by Holden's Commodore (3712), Toyota HiLux (3191) and Holden Cruze (3117).
Commodore leads the number one car race year to date.
Toyota was the best selling marque in September with 17,378 sales, followed by Holden (11,009), and Ford (8161).
