These spy photos snapped recently on German roads are of the next Porsche Cayman. An all-new design, the next generation of Porsche's mid-engined coupe is expected to be launched in European markets late in 2012.
Much of the design work on the mid-engined two-seater's body appears to have gone into opening up the rear view via a larger back window and re-shaped side glass aft of the doors.
Developed along with the next generation Boxster convertible, which shares the coupe's new platform with a longer wheelbase, the 2013 Cayman is expected to be more fluid on the road, and could take advantage of the longitudinal stretch by opening up the cab a little to provide more legroom.
Looking at these Carparazzi photos, the Cayman's stretch appears to be concentrated aft of the doors, giving credence to the extra-space speculation. Headroom could well be improved too.
Rumours regarding the Boxster and Cayman's new powerplants are rife.
There's no doubt there will be a new four-cylinder boxer (horizontally-opposed) engine, but whether it will be used in both open and coupe variants of the series is unclear. Predicted to be a twin-turbocharged 2.5-litre four, the new direct-injected powerplant may be limited to the cheaper Boxster. This would allow the Cayman to move further upmarket by staying six-cylinder only.
Transmissions choices are expected to include a six-speed manual or Porsche's seven-speed dual-clutch PDK auto.
