New electric Ford mid-size SUV teased again

Blocky American styling but Volkswagen ID.4 underpinnings for Ford’s incoming new SUV

Ford’s European electrification boss has posted a second teaser of the Blue Oval’s all-new battery-electric mid-size SUV that will be based on Volkswagen’s MEB architecture.

This time, Ford Model e Europe general manager Martin Sander lifted the cover on the still-to-be-named SUV – which will be fully revealed on March 21 – to show off a small portion of its front-end design.

That’s enough to confirm that the SUV will have boxy, truck-like American styling, including a bluff closed-in grille and a wider lower air intake.

These elements confirm earlier spy shots that the Ford SUV will have dramatically different styling to any Volkswagen ID model.

A previous teaser showed a large aerodynamically optimised alloy wheel and a bulging plastic-clad wheel-arch.

To be built at Ford’s factory in Cologne, Germany, the new SUV is expected to share plenty with the Volkswagen ID.4.

Ford also plans to mimic its German partner’s strategy by offering a sportier coupe-style model, just like the Volkswagen ID.5, and in the latest teaser image you can see a second model under cover.

The two vehicles under drapes suggest Ford might be planning to unwrap both the mid-size SUV and SUV-coupe on March 21.

Ford has yet to announce specifications, but count on familiar powertrains from the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 family including single-motor/rear-drive and dual-motor/all-wheel drive.

As far as batteries go, the top-shelf model should offer an 82kWh lithium-ion battery pack providing a range of up to 500km.

The EV is set to be positioned below the Ford Mustang Mach-E but above the upcoming Ford Puma EV that will indirectly replace the Fiesta light hatch in Europe.

It’s expected to go on sale in Europe before the end of this year, rivalling not only the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 but also the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6.

Since it will be sold in the UK, the new Ford SUV will be offered in right-hand drive, opening the door for Australian sales.

But bear in mind the Mustang Mach-E was launched back in 2019 and has still to venture Down Under.

Later this year, Volkswagen Australia will finally introduce both the ID.4 and ID.5 that will be followed by the ID.3 hatch in 2024.

Pricing for the ID.4 is expected to kick off at around $65,000 plus on-road costs.
