New EVs coming to Australia in 2025

In the market for an EV? You're in for a real treat, as 2025 will be a bumper year for new electric vehicles

It wasn’t that long ago when electric cars were few and far between on the Australian automotive landscape, but fast forward to 2025 and it seems every brand under the sun is racing to introduce their latest battery-powered hatch, SUV or ute.

Here’s our detailed list of the bold, beautiful, cute, exciting, wacky and even downright weird EVs that will land in Australian dealers this year – including some from brands you’ve probably never even heard of.

Aion EV Hatch

aion hatch render 01 2 zyot

When’s it due? April 2025

One of the fresh entrants to the Australian market will be a Toyota Corolla-sized hatch from Aion. It’s an EV brand perhaps few here have heard of, but it’s actually owned by China’s fifth-biggest carmaker, Guangzhou Automobile Group Motor, or GAC Motor for short.

If that doesn’t ring a bell, know that the Chinese auto giant sold a cool 2 million cars in 2024, with the firm hoping an expansion to Europe and Australia will boost total sales by more than 15 per cent in 2025.

In our market the heavy lifting will be done by both the hatch that will be here by April and the V – a Corolla Cross-sized electric SUV – that will land shortly after.

It’s still not yet clear whether Aion cars will be sold through traditional dealerships or via hybrid/online sales, but all will be revealed shortly ahead of both cars’ launch.

Alfa Romeo Junior

When’s it due? 2025

In 2024 Jaguar wasn’t the only brand to make headlines for the wrong reasons. Alfa also got itself into hot water when it dared to name its inbound Polish-built small SUV the Milano.

The backlash from the Italian government was instant, with Italian law mandating only products made in Italy could be named after an Italian place, forcing Alfa Romeo to make a very public U-turn and re-label its baby SUV the Junior.

Shame, because the controversy soon overshadowed the debut of what could be a best-seller Down Under.

Developed alongside the Peugeot e-2008, Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600e, the renamed Alfa Romeo Junior should arrive later this year with attractive pricing, a decent drive and striking styling, which should all see Australians give it a warm welcome.

Alpine A290

alpine a290 gts alpine vision blue 8 u06h
alpine a290 gts alpine vision blue 10 62ly

When’s it due? 2025

This Renault-owned performance brand will relaunch in 2025 with two all-new models that will both benefit from the fine brand-building already accomplished by the little A110 sports car that was dropped back in 2021, due to not passing ADR safety regulations.

Of the two, we expect the A290 to make the biggest impact, even beside the mid-size GT X-Over SUV that may or may not arrive later this year.

Not only is the little A290 impossibly cute, but it should also drive like the very best hot hatch and offer buyers brisk performance off the line.

Pricing remains to be seen but, like the Renault 5 EV, the little Alpine A290 looks like it could be one of the hottest new EVs to launch this year.

Alpine GT X-Over

alpine gt x over 1 r83c

When’s it due? April 2025

Alpine will launch not one but two mainstream models in 2025 and it’s highly likely the Porsche Macan-rivalling mid-size GT X-Over SUV will be the volume seller.

Based on the same CMF-EV platform that already underpins the Megane E-Tech, expect this Alpine to get striking styling, lots of power and one of the most agile drives going.

Key to providing class-leading dynamism when it comes to the Alpine’s handling will be minimising weight, say engineers, suggesting the brand’s continued use of lightweight material like aluminium and carbon-fibre – with the latter alien to the construction of even the latest Macan EV.

It all bodes well and, even in the ultra-competitive mid-size electric SUV class, the new Alpine GT X-Over stands a great chance of making a favourable impression.

Audi Q6 e-tron

audi q6 e tron 59 em7o

When’s it due? H1 2026

Audi will launch its most advanced EVs yet this year, beginning with the introduction of the mid-size Q6 e-tron SUV.

Spend some time with the posh Tesla Model Y rival and it’s hard not to be seduced. It offers an excellent drive, long range, quick charging speeds, intelligent on-board tech and the overwhelming feeling of quality.

In other words, it’s a class act, but we fear many might ignore it, pay a premium, and nab the closely related Porsche Macan EV.

When’s it due? 2025

Audi cements its return to form with the A6 e-tron – a sexy new luxury EV that stuns with its design and is offered in both Sportback sedan and Avant e-tron wagon form.

Better yet, its beauty runs further than skin deep, thanks to its advanced Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, shared with the Q6 e-tron, plus an ultra-low drag coefficient of just 0.21Cd (0.24Cd for the Avant) and a big 100kWh lithium-ion battery for which Audi claims a maximum range of more than 750km (WLTP).

Charging is another highlight. The new-generation battery can be topped up at up to 270kW when using a compatible DC fast charger, enabling a 10-80 per cent top-up in just 21 minutes.

To put that in context, find a fast DC charger and 310km of range can be added in just 10 minutes.

From launch there will be a 405kW S6 e-tron that can race from 0-100km/h in just 3.9 seconds, but we can’t wait for the even wilder RS 6 e-tron that’s rumoured to be in the pipeline and could have more than 600kW.

Audi e-tron GT

audi e tron gt a242569 z8dr
audi e tron gt a242575 e0dh
audi e tron gt a242576 9fmb

When’s it due? 2025

Audi’s supercar-troubling four-door is updated in 2025 and the big news is, as well as some exterior tweaks, there’s more power, a bigger and more advanced battery and overhauled suspension.

The new battery can also be charged at up to 320kW when using a DC fast charger (up from 270kW), yielding a 10-80 per cent charge in 18 minutes, and is 9kg lighter than the previous unit.

As well as the 500kW S e-tron GT (0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds), the RS e-tron GT gets a mighty 155kW power hike and now pumps out 630kW – enough for a blistering 2.8-second 0-100km/h dash.

A big chassis overhaul also means the e-tron GT will easily keep pace with the heavily revised Porsche Taycan.

BMW iX3 Neue Klasse

bmw vision neue klasse x 01 inform 23 g29l

When’s it due? 2025

There’s a huge weight on the mid-size BMW iX3’s shoulders as it is tasked with not only introducing the next chapter of the German carmaker’s design but also with debuting the advanced tech that underpins its future.

The same tech, BMW hopes, that should finally see it catch up with its most advanced rivals.

Helping it gain an advantage, BMW hopes, is that the iX3 is based on an all-new platform with nothing carried over from current models.

Key to its success is a move to Tesla-stye cylindrical battery cells that, combined with the new cells’ chemistry and construction, along with their 800V configuration, will enable very fast DC charging. It’ll take just 10 minutes to add 300km of driving range.

Efficiency will also improve by up to 25 per cent compared to current EVs for a longer real-world range.

Once launched the BMW iX3 will be followed by the 3 Series-replacing BMW i3 sedan in 2026.

Previewed by the Neue Klasse X Concept, BMW hopes its new range of EVs will represent a sublime expression of form and function.

BYD Sealion 7

When’s it due? Feb 2025

BYD is on track to overtake Tesla for global EV sales in 2025 and its cars like the Model Y-rivalling Sealion 7 that will help it achieve that goal.

In Australia, its cut-throat pricing (that undercuts the facelifted Model Y), high levels of advanced tech, spacious cabin and smart looks mean the Chinese brand has everything going for it in a sea of closely matched rivals.

Cupra Born VZ

cupra born vz 04 akmb
cupra born vz 19 h9fa
cupra born vz 20 fsyi

When’s it due? H1 2025

There are faster and more powerful EVs that are much quicker off the mark, but we think both traditional hot hatch buyers and electric car performance fans need to take the Cupra Born VZ seriously when it arrives in 2025.

Instead of dazzling you with tech and gimmicks and even straight-line thrust, the Born VZ wows you with a level of precision, engagement, old-school feel and sheer unexpected authenticity other fast electric cars simply don’t possess.

The old school rear-wheel-drive handling prowess seals the deal. This Spanish hot hatch is seriously fun.

Ford E-Transit Custom

When’s it due? Q1 2025

Ford’s all-electric one-tonne van lands in 2025 ready to impress commercial van buyers with its potent all-electric driveline. The Ford E-Transit Custom is packed with clever tech and has a driving range of up to 337km.

We think drivers will fall for its comfort, performance and many thoughtful touches that are designed to make working lives easier, safer and more efficient.

After our drive we declared the E-Transit Custom as a van that will finally tempt many businesses with an applicable use-case to switch to EV.

Perhaps we should have expected nothing less from a van-maker with six decades of van-making experience.

When’s it due? Q1 2025

Ford has steadily improved and updated its battery-electric SUV since it was first launched back in 2019 and, handily, for Australians the Mustang Mach-E seems to get cheaper with age.

For 2025, the Ford EV gets a lighter rear motor that produces an extra 98Nm of torque.

For the Select and Premium models offered Down Under, the upgrade should see them both produce 525Nm of torque – up from the current 430Nm – and shave two-tenths off their respective 0-100km/h acceleration time.

Software improvements, meanwhile, liberate extra range and faster DC charging for the Extended Range with a 10-80 per cent top-up now 36 minutes, while the Standard Range scores a five-minute improvement (now 32 minutes).

As well as the enhanced powertrain, all future Mustang Mach-Es should come with a standard heat pump, while buyers will get the option of a new Sports Appearance pack.

Final changes include a new column-mounted gear selector in place of the current car’s rotary dial, liberating more space within the centre console.

Perhaps the best news is a price cut could also be on the way, with US cars subjected to a nine per cent drop, but more will be revealed with official pricing and specifications.

Foton Tunland G7 EV ute

foton tunland v 1 4fzt
foton tunland v 5 4nud

When’s it due? 2025

Spearheading China’s Foton commercial brand’s relaunch Down Under this year will be the Foton Tunland G7 – the electric dual-cab that will rival the pioneering LDV eT60 and the inbound Radar/Riddara RD6 and Tembo Tusker, plus eventual EV versions of the Kia Tasman and BYD Shark.

The Chinese brand has not released full technical details for its new ute but early intel suggests it will have a payload of 1090kg and be able to tow up to 3000kg.

Powered by a single e-motor that should pump out 130kW and 330Nm, the new Foton has been tipped to come with a range of around 500km.

With the relaunch in the hands of global vehicle distribution giant Inchcape – the local importer of Subaru and Peugeot – it’s hoped the new arrival will be accompanied by aggressive pricing that will undercut the costly LDV eT60 that is listed from $92,990 plus ORCs.

Geely Radar/Riddara RD6 ute

geely radar rd5 3 0hjt

geely radar rd5 1 fydp

When’s it due? 2025

Another example of a new brand launch with an electric dual-cab ute is the Geely Radar that will land later this year.

Unlike all existing utes, Geely has traded some ruggedness, payload (755-775kg) and towing might (2500kg) for something that should major in comfort and sophistication with the new Radar, that sits on a car-like monocoque rather than a ladder-frame chassis.

Set to entice lifestyle buyers, the zero-emission Ranger rival will come with a single 200kW/384Nm electric motor and a 63kWh lithium-ion unit offering up to 385km of range according lenient CLTC testing, while a bigger 86kWh battery brings a claimed 517km of range.

Both powertrains are claimed to hit 100km/h in 7.6 seconds and can be fast charged from 30-80 per cent in roughly 30 minutes when using DC power.

When launched expect the pickup to bag matrix LED lamps, have the option of leather seats and come with a widescreen infotainment system.

Throw in what should be one of the best drives and the Geely could poach those who would normally have bought a turbo-diesel Ranger or HiLux.

Geely E5

geely e5 2 btwy
geely e5 8 uzr1
geely e5 10 iqsc

When’s it due? Mid-2025

Geely will soon outline its masterplan for conquering Australia and helping to lead the charge will be both its Radar ute and the Tesla Model Y-rivalling Geely E5.

In China the E5 is powered by a 160kW/320Nm singe e-motor and comes with the choice of either 49.5kWh or 60.2kWh Aegis short-blade lithium-ion battery packs that deliver ranges of 440km and 530km respectively.

Against the clock the E5 is brisk, with 0-100km/h taking 6.9 seconds, while thanks to it sitting on a derivation of Geely’s versatile SEA electric architecture (dubbed GEA), the Geely mid-size SUV gets weight-saving cell-to-body battery integration that helps deliver a perfect 50:50 weight distribution.

Arriving with advanced level two autonomous driving capability and a large 15.4-inch floating infotainment touchscreen, plus a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel, head-up display and a 16-speaker sound system, the Chinese Tesla rival will not lack for anything in its bid to make an instant impression on buyers Down Under.

Genesis Electrified G80

genesis electrified g80 2 6p9r
genesis electrified g80 8 a350
genesis electrified g80 4 4pbd

When’s it due? 2025

The Genesis Electrified G80 freshens up in 2025 with exterior and interior tweaks, a longer wheelbase and a larger battery in a bid to boost the appeal of the electric luxury sedan Down Under.

The headline news is the generous levels of space now offered – thanks to the stretching of the wheelbase by an extra 130mm, the Korean BMW 5 Series rival delivers near best-in-class rear legroom.

Beneath the skin, the new 95.4kWh battery (up from 87.2kWh) should see it have a WLTP range of more than 540km (up from 520km).

Externally, you won’t miss the Electrified G80’s fresh look that includes a revised front grille insert, tweaked adaptive LED headlights and larger 20-inch alloy wheels, while inside it’s hard not to be wowed by the cabin.

Mirroring what’s happened with the GV80 SUV, the upgraded G80 sedan gets an enormous single 27.0-inch-wide OLED display that’s responsible for both the infotainment and instrument cluster.

Full details of the powertrain have yet to be revealed, but post revisions the new 2025 Electrified G80 sedan could pip the current Mercedes EQE and EQS as the world’s most luxurious electric sedan when it arrives later this year.

GWM Ora Sport

When’s it due? 2025

Chinese brand GWM hasn’t played it safe with its Tesla Model 3 alternative and if you buy into its teardrop looks and relish the choice of being able to order your car in pink or purple, you’ll discover a genuinely attractive and more affordable alternative to Australia’s top-selling EV.

Almost as big as a Toyota Camry, the Ora Sport is a substantial 177mm longer than its US opposition, which should bode well for space within.

From launch, there should be the choice of two batteries – a 65kWh power pack that should deliver a 450km range and a larger 84kWh battery that will see the large sedan cover more than 550km on a single charge.

We’ve driven the tepid single-motor version that produces 150kW and 340Nm that felt a little down on performance beside the Model 3, but a dual-motor version with 300kW and 680Nm should fix that gripe with its 0-100km/h sprint of just 4.3 seconds.

Quiet and well equipped with plush luxury-car-like heated or ventilated faux leather seats (with massage function), prices are tipped to kick off at around $55,000 when sales begin later this year, which could seal the deal for those migrating from the Tesla Model 3.

Hyundai Inster

hyundai inster reveal 5 udpk
hyundai inster reveal 4 8azv
hyundai inster reveal 9 umxy

When’s it due? Q1 2025

Korean EV pioneer Hyundai will finally offer its entry Inster later this year, with the cute pint-size SUV set to land Down Under with a price tag of less than $40,000.

Built to battle the MG4, BYD Dolphin and GWM Ora, the Hyundai Inster measures just 3825mm long, 1610mm wide, 1575mm tall and rides on a 2580mm wheelbase, making it 230mm longer than the Hyundai Casper.

When it lands the entry-level Standard features a 42kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese battery and a 71kW/147Nm electric motor mounted on the front axle, offering about 300km from a single charge, a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 11.7 seconds and a top speed of 140km/h.

The Long Range adds a larger 49kWh battery and a more powerful 85kW/147Nm motor that boosts the range up to 355km, trims the 0-100km/h time down to 10.7 seconds and lifts the top speed to 150km/h.

Both powerpacks can be recharged at up to 120kW when using DC power and will go from 10-80 per cent in a claimed 30 minutes.

The smart exterior styling is blended within with an innovative front bench (in some markets) that grants a walk-through cabin.

In the rear, legroom is impressive for its size while in-car tech is on par with much larger vehicles, with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster combined with a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen.

The cabin even features plenty of recycled PET and bio-polypropylene materials extracted from sugarcane, plus the choice of black or two-tone Khaki Brown and Newtro Beige colour palettes, which means the Inster should appeal to both fashion-conscious urbanites and those in the market for an affordable EV.

Hyundai IONIQ 9

hyundai ioniq 9 1 1 5bxi
hyundai ioniq 9 3 1 9isf
hyundai ioniq 9 3 95lw

When’s it due? June 2025

The flagship Hyundai IONIQ 9 three-row electric SUV is almost here and could be the perfect solution for families ready to switch to EVs.

Measuring more than five metres long and offered in six- or seven-seat configurations, the IONIQ 9 has been built to battle not only the closely related Kia EV9, but also more expensive electric SUVs like the Volvo EX90 as well as traditional family haulers like the Volvo XC90 and Mazda CX-90.

Winning over buyers is its loungeroom-inspired interior with countless cup holders, plenty of power outlets, multiple storage cubbies and even swivelling seats.

Flagship versions will be offered with fully reclining front- and middle-row seats complete with heating, cooling and advanced massage functionality that’s said to boost blood circulation.

Powered by a massive 110kWh lithium-ion battery pack claimed to offer up to 620km of WLTP range, the IONIQ 9 gets an 800V e-GMP architecture that means it can be DC fast charged at up to 350kW, with a 10 to 80 per cent top-up taking just 24 minutes.

Base-grade Long Range variants are powered by a 160kW/350Nm e-motor mounted to the rear axle while the equivalent Long Range AWDs add a 70kW/255Nm motor onto the front axle (combined power output is to be confirmed).

The flagship Performance AWD system meantime ups the ante with a 160kW/350Nm front motor, netting it a 5.3-second 0-100km/h time. And if that’s not enough, an N version will be along soon.

Hyundai IONIQ 6 N

hyundai rn22e 1 acm3
hyundai rn22e 6 xcr2
hyundai rn22e 5 kg0a

When’s it due? 2025

Undoubtedly one of the most exciting EVs to be launched in 2025 will be the Hyundai IONIQ 6 N super-sedan.

Picking up where the sublime IONIQ 5 N left off, the big-winged 6 N is tipped to be far more than a rebodied version of the Korean electric hot hatch.

Catching it testing late last year revealed how it will sport its own huge aero, that will include a fixed rear wing, more aggressive side skirts, a new diffuser and front spoiler and bigger wheels to hide its large performance brake upgrade.

Even if the IONIQ 6 N dual-motor powertrain produces no more power than the regular IONIQ 5 N (478kW/770Nm), the latest battery-powered N car should once again raise the bar for its handling and engagement behind the wheel.

Expect it to also debut Hyundai's latest-generation chassis tech, as well as an evolution of the hot hatch’s virtual sound and gearshift tech.

The result will be a mini Porsche Taycan beater at a fraction of the price.

Isuzu D-MAX Electric

isuzu dmax concept 7 7yju
isuzu dmax concept 14 7sd4
isuzu dmax concept 12 48g9

When’s it due? 2025

Isuzu has also whetted our appetite for its inbound Isuzu D-MAX Electric ute following the reveal of a prototype last year.

That truck featured a dual-motor powertrain that enabled the popular pickup to feature both a one-tonne payload and tow up to 3500kg.

Blending a rear motor that produces 90kW with a smaller front 40kW e-motor, combined Isuzu said its LDV eT60 rival mustered 130kW and 325Nm of torque – figures that are expected to be replicated by the production version.

Maximum speed is more than 130km/h, while a 66.9kWh lithium-ion battery should provide a range of up to 450km on the WLTP test cycle.

There’s no word on off-the-line performance but the all-electric ute is limited to a top speed of 130km/h.

Jeep Wrangler EV

jeep wrangler magneto 3 concept 4 30um

When’s it due? 2025

Likely to enrage the hardcore Jeep Wrangler fanbase, this is the year the US 4x4 brand unwraps, perhaps, the most controversial car in its modern history.

Previewed most recently back in 2024 by the Magneto 3.0 concept, the Jeep icon reinvented for the electric age used state-of-the-art tech to ensure that its EV would venture far further off the beaten track than any battery-powered car has ever gone.

That explains why the battery-electric off-roader mirrors the all-electric Mercedes G-wagen by employing axial flux electric motors that are not only lighter but more power dense and, combined, produce an almighty 485kW and 1220Nm in the concept.

Powering the Jeep was a 70kWh battery that should deliver a range of around 400km.

In a move to appease Wrangler diehards, the concept employed a six-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case.

The standard Jeep’s Dynatrack axles and coil spring suspension were also used, while a 3.0-inch lift kit, 20-inch bead-lock rims and the 40-inch mud terrain tyres all signal how serious the US brand is with its EV when comes to getting down and dirty.

Also likely to reach the production model are slick selectable drive modes offering selectable brake energy regeneration modes with street and off-road settings, plus a battery-saving mode that winds power back to 209kW.

Kia EV3

When’s it due? Q2 2025

The new Kia EV3 is the Korean carmaker’s smallest EV to date and – to ensure it makes an impression against the likes of the strong-selling MG ZS EV and the well-established Hyundai Kona Electric – the latest small SUV mimics the flagship EV9’s bold looks.

Within, the good news continues as the brand hasn’t skimped when it comes to the cabin and some of the advanced tech.

When it arrives, most EV3s will bag a massive 81.4kWh battery that should see it cover up to 600km on a charge. A more affordable 58.3kWh version will also be available to lower the price point to below $50,000 plus ORCs.

Sadly, the EV3 doesn’t carry over the EV6 and EV9’s powerful 800V electronic architecture, with the 400V system lowering DC charging to 128kW DC fast charging.

When the small Kia EV lands, all variants will come with a 150kW/283Nm single e-motor, with dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions coming later.

Weirdly, even though size-wise there’s plenty of overlap with the Niro EV, the other small electric Kia SUV will remain on sale for the time being.

Kia EV4

kia ev4 hatchback 004 m40t
kia ev4 hatchback 007 gdz2
kia ev4 hatchback 002 v9ep

When’s it due? Q2 2025

While the inbound EV3 might be Kia’s smallest electric car to date, the all-new Kia EV4 hatch and sedan will be the cheapest when sales kick off later this year.

Mirroring the brash styling of the K4, beneath the skin the new EV4 will sit on an entirely different e-GMP platform.

That means it should come with a 150kW/283Nm single e-motor and the choice of either a 58.3kWh or a larger 81.4kWh power pack.

With the latter, the lower and sleeker aerodynamically honed hatch and sedan could travel more than 650km on a single charge, setting new standards for a battery-powered hatch.

It’s not known yet if Kia might also roll out a hot GT version that could blend supercar-humbling straight-line speed with the carmaker’s latest chassis tech.

Kia EV6

2025 kia ev6 18 9w48
2025 kia ev6 17 7gn6
2025 kia ev6 10 fv7c

When’s it due? Q1 2025

Four years after its debut, the Kia EV6 freshens up for 2025 with a new face, bigger battery, fresh tech and a heavily upgraded flagship GT that boasts epic power.

You’ll recognise the updated take on the pioneering Kia SUV by its new front and rear bumpers, restyled alloy wheels and tweaked cabin.

Most will be more attracted to the new larger 84kWh battery pack that boosts the range, plus ultra-fast 350kW DC charging that slashes the time it takes to top up the battery from 10-80 per cent in just 18 minutes.

Other changes include chassis tweaks across the board, extra soundproofing in the rear, thicker B-pillars and an airbag count that increases to 10.

The most exciting development by far is what’s happened to the Kia EV6 GT, with the flagship version adopting the IONIQ 5 N’s 478kW/770Nm powertrain, marking a 48kW/30Nm jump in outputs.

Kia has yet to reveal how the extra power has impacted the EV6 GT’s performance, though the expectation is for it to at least match the IONIQ 5 N’s 3.4-second 0-100km/h time, trimming the old model’s sprint down from 3.5 seconds.

The EV6 GT also gets the IONIQ 5 N’s virtual transmission – also adopted on the new EV9 GT – which emulates an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission along with the power band, redline and sound.

Kia EV9 GT

2026 ev9 gt 21 r5ms
2026 ev9 gt 17 6f9h
2026 ev9 gt 05 sca9

When’s it due? H2 2025

It’s hard not to be impressed by the regular all-electric Kia EV9, but one thing the flagship three-row SUV has missed out on is hot-hatch-humbling performance – until now.

Later this year the Korean brand will unleash the Kia EV9 GT – the fast all-wheel-drive version that features a 374kW dual-motor powertrain that’s good for 0-100km/h in a claimed 4.3 seconds.

Helping it keep up with its newfound performance, the EV9 GT boasts retuned springs, adaptive dampers, sway bars, enlarged brakes and stickier tyres to ensure sharper dynamics.

Like the wild Hyundai IONIQ 5 N with which it shares its powertrain, the EV9 GT bags a virtual eight-speed transmission and active sound design that mimics the old school gear shifts for a more engaging drive.

Powering the EV9 GT should be the same 99.8kWh battery as the rest of the line-up that allows an ultra-fast DC charge of up to 350kW, with a 10-80 per cent charge taking 25 minutes.

Advertising its monster power, the EV9 GT gets different 21-inch alloy wheels and bigger lime-green brake calipers, while the body sports redesigned bumpers, new active air flaps and tweaked lights.

Within, there’s Alcantara sport seats, different ambient lighting, and lime green stitching, accents and graphics, as well as plenty of GT badges.

Kia Stinger EV

kia stinger ev news 1 izct

When’s it due? 2025

The fast Kia Stinger will be reinvented for 2025 when the fast four-door performance sedan will return with pure-electric power.

According to early reports, the new Stinger is secretly being developed under the GT1 codename and when it returns it will feature the firm's next-generation powertrain tech that includes a huge 113.2kWh battery.

The first car to sit on the Hyundai Motor Group’s all-new eM electric vehicle architecture, the new Stinger will combine at least 450kW with a range of more than 700km.

Even the entry version will come with 320kW.

Claims are yet to be made about just how quick the new Stinger EV will be, but expect the GT version to launch from 0-100km/h in around 3.0 seconds.

Land Rover Range Rover Electric

range rover electric

When’s it due? 2025

Looking almost indistinguishable from the regular petrol or diesel-powered luxury SUV, the Range Rover Electric enters uncharted territory for the British SUV brand when sales begin Down Under later this year.

Based on the same Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform as the current combustion and plug-in hybrid Range Rovers, the latest zero-emission luxury SUV has been promised to “deliver performance comparable to a flagship V8”.

Expect a power output of around 500kW with epic levels of torque for a sub-five-second 0-100km/h dash.

Land Rover has already announced the Range Rover Electric will come with an 800V electrical architecture that should allow for fast DC charging of between 270-350kW.

With a battery size of around 100kWh or more, expect a 20-80 per cent top up in around 25 minutes.

Perhaps the most astonishing thing about the battery-electric Rangie is it will be even quieter than the current SUV and even more capable off-road, with the Brit brand already releasing videos of it climbing 90m-tall sand dunes, drifting on ice and going far further off road than you would ever imagine.

LDV eTerron 9

2025 ldv terron 9 ute testing 16x9 26 axh6

When’s it due? Mid-2025

LDV will introduce its next-generation LDV eTerron 9 later this year that will be introduced to sit above the slow-selling eT60 ute.

Measuring in at 5500mm long – 105mm longer than the eT60 – the eTerron 9 is 1997mm wide (+97mm), stands 1860mm high (+41mm) and rides on a 3300mm wheelbase (+125mm), making it considerably bigger than the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.

Available in single- and dual-motor forms good for 200kW and 325kW respectively, the new eTerron 9 is quick.

The all-wheel-drive version is claimed to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 5.8 seconds, while a large 102kWh lithium-ion battery will provide a claimed WLTP range of about 430km.

Inside, the flagship eTerron 9 spearheads the brand’s latest cabin design and tech that includes a pair of large 12.3-inch screens.

Like the bigger-still Ford F-150 Lightning, the new eTerron 9 gets the added benefit of a large frunk, while within there’s said to be lots more space to lounge out in, compared to a smaller Ranger.

Leapmotor C16

c16 2 ndpg
c16 4 4 wjg8
c16 6 1 9wti

When’s it due? 2025

China’s Leapmotor is primed to follow up its value-packed C10 mid-sizer with a family-friendly three-row Leapmotor C16 SUV.

Measuring in at 4915mm long, 1905mm wide, and 1770mm tall, and with a 2825mm wheelbase, the Leapmotor C16 matches its smaller sibling for in-car tech that includes a large 14.6-inch floating-effect infotainment screen and a smaller digital instrument cluster.

In some markets a six-seater version will also be offered that bags tri-zone climate control, heated and ventilated seating for the first and second row, and a powerful 21-speaker stereo system that combines with a 15.6-inch rear entertainment screen.

What we won’t get is the most sophisticated driver assist tech that includes Level 3 hands- and eyes-off the road driving that’s already been deployed in China.

When it arrives here, expect the C16 to be driven by a single e-motor that produces 215kW and 360Nm.

Matched with a 67.7kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, the C16 can travel up to 520km on the more lenient Chinese test cycle.

When it arrives the new Leapmotor could provide a cut-price alternative to both the Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9, as well as the smaller seven-seat version of the recently facelifted Tesla Model Y.

Lexus HZ

lexus bev sedan front 16x9 73vt
lexus bev sedan rear 16x9 x8lc

When’s it due? 2025

Adopting a nameplate more commonly associated with an old ’70s Holden, the new Lexus HZ is the advanced battery-powered replacement for the mid-size IS sedan.

Built to sit below the RZ in Lexus’ growing EV line-up, the new Lexus HZ will be offered with three new powertrains: HZ300e, HZ450e, and the flagship HZ550e.

It’s rumoured the entry HZ300e premium sedan will come with an efficient single e-motor that will pump out 150kW and 300Nm of torque.

Thought to have already been previewed by the Lexus Electrified Sedan Concept that was unveiled back in February 2022, the new HZ should stun with its styling and impress with its luxurious cabin within.

It’s not been announced yet but the new Lexus HZ is rumoured to have been developed in collaboration with Chinese auto giant BYD, although the new Tesla Model 3 alternative will remain based on an upgraded version of Toyota’s eTNGA platform.

For now, patents suggest Australia will only receive the entry-level version, but Lexus Australia might be tempted to import the all-electric wild IS-F replacement that’s also rumoured to be secretly in development.

Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology

When’s it due? Early 2025

Things will get very strange in the coming weeks when the first batch of Mercedes G 580 with EQ Technology begin rolling into Aussie dealers, as instantly the car brand’s oldest-looking vehicle will become its most advanced.

What first sounded like a gimmick, the battery-electric G-wagen is one of the most astonishing 4x4s ever launched.

Featuring a single e-motor per wheel, each punching out 108kW and 290Nm, all that urge is then channelled through a two-speed gearbox that features low range for off-roading.

Combined, the total output is 432kW and 1164Nm of torque – amply sufficient to shrug off the imposing 3085kg kerb weight, and for the SUV to launch from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds. Top speed is 180km/h.

Just one battery will be offered with the G 580e, a large 116kWh lithium-ion pack, that offers a respectable range of around 473km.

Despite a 400V electrical architecture that caps charging to a rate of 200kW, a 10-80 per cent fast charge still takes an acceptable 32 minutes, but where the G 580e really stuns is what happens when you go off-road.

Despite the sheer weight of the big battery and all the electronics, the electric G delivers gobsmacking off-road capability, while the G-Turn tank turning ability and agility-boosting G-Steering makes going very far off-road effortless.

MG ES5

mg es5 8 jxgk
mg es5 9 l12v
mg es5 z8pq

When’s it due? H1 2025

The strong-selling MG4 hatch will finally be joined by an SUV brother later this year when MG introduces its ES5 SUV.

Based on the MG4’s Modular Scalable Platform, the ES5 is hotly tipped to replace the MG ZS EV when it hits Aussie dealers.

Like the MG4, the new small SUV will feature rear-wheel drive and come with a sophisticated five-link independent rear suspension, rather than the MG ZS’ front-drive platform.

When it lands the ES5 will measure in at 4476mm long, 1849mm wide and 1621mm tall on a 2730mm wheelbase. Those figures suggest it will be around 162mm longer than a MG ZS with a wheelbase stretched by 149mm, which would put it at the larger end of the small SUV segment.

Battery types are not yet clear but expect to see one or more of the MG4’s energy systems, with the 51kWh, 64kWh and possibly 77kWh batteries set to appear on the menu.

The single e-motor will produce 125kW and 250Nm, which will see it sprint from 0-100km/h in just 8.0 seconds.

Later on, an XPOWER version might also join the ranks, which should produce 320kW/620Nm from its dual-motor powertrain. If so, expect a sub-4.0 second 0-100km/h acceleration time and a top speed of around 200km/h.

Within, the ES5 will come with a large landscape-mounted infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster that could preview the next-gen MG4’s cabin.

Mini Aceman JCW and Mini JCW Electric

mini john cooper works electric 12 6bzt

When’s it due? Q1 2025

Faster variants of both the Mini Cooper and Aceman John Cooper Works will be introduced in the first few months of 2024, bringing more performance, a sports chassis and styling tweaks.

Whichever you choose, both come with a single-motor, front-drive powertrain outputting a healthy 190kW/350Nm – enough to launch the hatch from 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds and the Aceman in 6.4 seconds.

Both models will top out at 200km/h.

An extra 20kW is available temporarily via the boost paddle on the steering wheel for rapid overtakes but can only be accessed when ‘go-kart’ mode is activated.

Both JCW EVs rely on a 54.2kWh battery for sustenance, the unit providing up to 371km of WLTP range for the hatch and 355km for the Aceman.

Marking the hero models apart from their lesser stablemates are the usual JCW hallmarks like chequered logos, a high-gloss octagonal front grille, C-pillar aero blades, dedicated JCW LED daytime running lamps, black side skirts and a rear spoiler, plus red vertical reflectors and a black rear diffuser.

The hatch rides on two-tone black-and-white 18-inch alloy wheels while the Aceman gets red-and-black 19s, each wrapped in performance tyres, hiding a big brake package and suspended by springs and dampers.

Both models mark the first time the high-performance JCW treatment had been applied to a Mini EV and suggest even faster variants of zero-emission models are on the way.

Nio Onvo L60

nio onvo l60 m2eh
nio onvo l60 1 is0r

When’s it due? 2025

Nio’s launch Down Under is linked with the brand’s arrival in the right-hand-drive UK market but the jury’s out on whether it will touch down this year.

To help pave the way the brand has already filed trademarks with IP Australia and the premium brand is likely to launch first with its state-of-the art Onvo L60.

Built to rival the mid-size Tesla Model Y SUV, the Onvo L60 overshadows all its rivals when it comes to tech, with the slippery SUV Coupe coming with a 900V architecture for some of the fastest charging in the business.

Nio hasn’t claimed just how quickly the Onvo L60 can be topped up but expect a 10-80 per cent charge to dip below 15 minutes, making it one of the fastest-charging cars money can buy.

It’s likely we’ll initially miss out on the firm’s trademark battery-swap tech, with buyers set to be offered the choice of a 60kWh, 90kWh or huge 150kWh power pack.

That said, the Chinese firm has built more than 50 battery-swap stations in Europe, so they might arrive later. Currently, a battery exchange is now claimed to take just over two minutes.

Thanks to its smooth body, the range for the base model is 553km, while mid-spec versions will cover 730km. The flagship model, meanwhile, should travel more than 1000km.

Priced from just $45,000 in China, it’s thought the Nio-owned Onvo sub-brand will undercut its Tesla opposition.

As well as cheaper, the Onvo L60 is 78mm longer, 9mm wider, 8mm shorter but has a longer 2950mm wheelbase (+60mm) compared to the Model Y, meaning it should offer lots more space within.

Also in the frame for Australia is both the Tesla Model 3-rivalling ET5 hatch and the Nio ES6 that is a natural Model Y rival.

Peugeot E-2008

peugeot e 2008 1 c7tg
peugeot e 2008 3 ecoz

When’s it due? 2025

After a brief flirtation with the previous E-2008, the French car brand pressed pause for the facelifted model that’s now set to arrive in 2025 – a year later than planned.

The change of heart followed the brand dumping plug-in hybrids and killing off its mid-size 508 sedan, while rolling out new mild-hybrid powertrains across multiple models and pushing back the arrival of some key EVs.

Revealed back in 2023, the last update we received stated that the MY25 E-2008 would touch down in the first quarter of this year but the absence of it on its retail website is telling.

When it finally rocks up the refreshed E-2008 will sport updated exterior styling, be powered by a punchier 115kW electric motor (+15kW), and come with a larger 54kWh battery (+4kWh) that will provide a better 406km (+61km) range.

Peugeot E-3008

peugeot e 3008 22 aedm
peugeot e 3008 2 oi0y
peugeot e 3008 12 w69h

When’s it due? 2025

It seems a crying shame to deny your most advanced EV to Australian buyers but there’s still no launch date for the all-new E-3008, with the French carmaker announcing only that its Tesla Model Y rival will land later this year.

In Europe, Peugeot has already rolled out three versions of the E-3008.

The entry-level E-3008 with 157kW and 343Nm draws energy from a 73kWh battery that offers a range of 525km.

Most of the attention though has been focused on the mid-spec version, which ups power to 170kW and when combined with a larger 98kWh battery offers a very respectable 700km range.

Finally, a dual-motor variant produces 240kW and 509Nm for a brisk 0-100km/h time of 6.4 seconds, but it only uses the smaller 73kWh pack for a less headline-grabbing range of 525km.

Charging for all three is said to take less than 30 minutes for a 20-80 per cent top-up, with charging rates capped at a mediocre 160kW.

Despite being 210mm shorter, 88mm narrower but 16mm taller than the Tesla Model Y, the E-3008 is said to offer plenty of space for passengers and luggage, but many will be drawn to the stylish sleek coupe-SUV’s looks.

Inside, there’s a huge 21-inch Panoramic i-Cockpit that sits proudly within a smart contemporary cabin, boosting the French Tesla rival’s appeal further.

Polestar 5

polestar 5 prototype 471 dzxy

When’s it due? 2025

This year Polestar will launch its fastest, best-driving EV yet when the drapes come off the Polestar 5 – a sleek four-door coupe created to beat the likes of the Porsche Taycan and the Lotus Emeya.

Picking up where the 2020 Precept concept left off, the new Polestar 5 is based on a lightweight aluminium spaceframe chassis that slashes the kilos, maximising the performance of a dual-motor powertrain that should push out a monstrous 650kW and 900Nm.

Once launched, Polestar will introduce its ‘extreme fast charging’ tech that is being developed with StoreDot. This is said to add around 160km of range in just five minutes with a 350kW charger, without any heating up or degradation of the battery.

Most will be attracted to the Polestar 5 by its sleek looks, light and spacious cabin and the fact it could out-Porsche Porsche with its drive.

Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman

porsce 718 boxster spy 4 esvd
porsce 718 boxster spy 8 oue8

When’s it due? 2025

We first saw the battery-powered roadster and small coupe testing almost three years ago, when the thought of switching to pure-electric power angered enthusiasts. Even today, the idea of a near-silent zero-emission Boxster and Cayman still sounds radical.

Luckily, cars like the latest MG Cyberster have shown the idea has legs. Factor in sensational styling inspired by the Porsche Mission R concept, plus epic power and scalpel sharp dynamics, and the end result should eventually win over even diehard fans.

Based on an all-new bespoke platform that should mount the batteries in a stacked layout behind the driver and passenger, the two-seat roadster should replicate the current car’s mid-engine handling but adds supercar levels of pace when it arrives later this year, if Porsche’s plans aren’t thwarted by supply issues.

According to rumours both the next-gen Boxster and Cayman could be delayed as the battery firm that had agreed to supply its powerpacks has gone bankrupt, meaning we might have to wait another year before both cars land Down Under.

Renault 5 E-Tech

renault 5 e tech electric 104 my9b
renault 5 e tech electric 92 hjd2
renault 5 e tech electric 12 86ap

When’s it due? 2025

Officially, just the unhinged 375kW Renault 5 Turbo 3E is confirmed for Australia, but there’s still no word on if the regular small five-door hatch is bound for Oz.

While we expect an announcement shortly, the cute city-slicking EV hatch could touch down here before the end of the year, while building the anticipation of the reborn R5 is the fact it’s already won the annual European Car of the Year award.

It’s no wonder – this small, chic hatch is desirable in a way most sub-$40,000 electric cars just aren’t.

Its beauty is also more than skin deep, from its dedicated all-electric powertrain to the fact it comes with expensive multi-link rear suspension for a fine balance of ride and handling. It even gets disc brakes all round.

While it won’t trouble many hot hatches off the line, the reborn R5 is brisk, should handle and ride well and charges from 15-80 per cent in an acceptable 30 minutes.

Inside, and like the exterior, the new small Renault playfully references the 1972 original, but blends the retro mix of design and finishes with state-of-the-art in-car tech.

We think it will be a winner here and could finally see Australians overcome their disdain for small cars.

Renault Scenic E-Tech

renault scenic e tech 1 2iz0
renault scenic e tech 2 jo1s

When’s it due? 2025

Another car in with a chance for a launch Down Under is the latest Renault Scenic E-Tech, which switches to pure EV power.

Already on sale in Europe, the Megane E-Tech-based SUV shares the same platform as the Megane but at 4470mm long is 320mm shorter than the Model Y – yet it still manages to deliver plenty of space within its cabin.

In Europe two single-motor powertrains are offered. The lesser ‘Standard Range’ produces 125kW/280Nm and draws current from a 60kWh battery, while the ‘High Range’ features a 160kW/300Nm motor and an 87kWh battery pack.

With the small battery owners can cover up to 418km, while with the bigger power pack the range is boosted to 610km.

Throw in a well-equipped and stylish cabin, a 12.3-inch infotainment system that runs Android Automotive, and a clever panoramic roof that goes from clear to opaque with the touch of a button, and it would be a crying shame to miss out on latest Scenic.

Skoda Elroq

skoda elroq 1 jpai
skoda elroq 2 4eil
skoda elroq 5 60qy

When’s it due? H2 2025

The Skoda Elroq is locked and loaded to enter Australian showrooms from the second half of this year, with the small-medium SUV primed to be an indirect replacement for the combustion-engined Karoq.

Introducing the Czech brand’s new Tech Deck Face, which is part of its Modern Solid design language, the new Elroq is offered in four variants in Europe – three with a single e-motor and one flagship dual-motor version.

The entry-level Elroq 50 will pair the 55kWh battery with a 125kW motor and cover roughly 370km (WLTP) on a full charge, whereas the second-tier Elroq 60 will score the 63kWh unit and up the ante with a 150kW motor and a range of around 400km.

At the top of the tree, and combined with an 82kWh battery, is the Elroq 85, which gets either a 210kW single motor for 560km of range or a faster ‘85x’ dual motor that should pump out around 250kW.

With DC fast charging pegged between 145kW and 175kW, depending on the battery, a 10-80 per cent top up should takes less than 30 minutes across all models.

Within, the Elroq gets Skoda’s latest cabin design and tech that includes a 13-inch infotainment system.

Neat touches within include a charger cable holder under the tailgate, dual wireless chargers and buttress-style design for the centre console that maximises storage.

Skoda Enyaq

skoda enyaq sportline 001 range shot h30o
skoda enyaq 010 side basis opx4
skoda enyaq 011 side coupe edtx

When’s it due? Q3 2025

Less than a year after the Enyaq’s Australian debut, the all-electric mid-size SUV has been under the knife.

Borrowing the same Tech Deck front fascia from the Elroq, the new styling helps slash the Enyaq’s drag coefficient for up to 36km of additional range.

That’s impressive, especially considering the current range’s powertrains carry over largely unchanged.

In Australia that means an 82kWh battery pack and 210kW/545Nm single-motor set-up for the base Sportline, and a punchier 250kW/545Nm dual-motor system for the flagship RS – the facelifted version of which is yet to be revealed.

The new exterior is combined with a mildly updated cabin – with a new steering wheel and colour combinations – and updated infotainment system, the latter nabbing some new software, a quick-access control bar and other convenience functions.

Skywell EVA 5

skywell eva 5 00 m72x
skywell eva 5 01 ker7
skywell eva 5 07 6ylz

When’s it due? Q1 2025

China’s Skywell might be a big unknown to most Australians but that won’t stop the brand touching down in the coming weeks under the guardianship of Brisbane-based EV Automotive, which has been importing the firm’s battery-powered vans for the last five years.

First off the boat will be the Skywell ET5, which will be rebadged simply the EVA 5.

Created to fight the top-selling Tesla Model Y and the BYD Atto 3, the mid-size electric SUV should be an attractive proposition for those searching out a bargain, with pricing set to kick off at less than $50,000 drive away.

When it arrives the EVA 5 will be offered in three variants. Base models will come with a 72kWh battery that delivers a 400km range, while the flagship versions bag an 86kWh battery that sees the mid-sizer cover up to 489km on a single charge.

All versions are powered by a 150kW/320Nm electric motor mounted on the front axle, resulting in a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.9 seconds.

Following in the tyre tracks of BYD, the EVA 5 will be offered to customers via EV Automotive’s direct-sales model and distributed via its existing partners, while servicing will be carried out by MyCar (formerly Kmart Tyre and Auto) that has 270 repair centres nationwide.

Smart #5

smart 5 9 5cs1
smart 5 10 oszk
smart 5 8 3kmy

When’s it due? Late 2025

Smart founded a fine reputation for its tiny innovative city cars but since going all-electric has branched out into larger SUVs that include the #1 wagon and #3 coupe.

Towards the end of this year the Geely-Mercedes-owned firm launches its biggest, most expensive model yet, with the Smart #5 pitching the brand at the crowded but lucrative mid-size SUV segment.

Designed by Benz and engineered and built by Geely in China, the Smart #5 is tipped to be priced from $70,000 when it arrives in the second half of 2025.

Revealed last year in NSW’s Byron Bay, the #5’s rugged styling and height-adjustable air suspension hinted at some prowess in the dirt and pre-launch testing Down Under.

When it arrives all versions of the Smart #5 will come with a large 100kWh battery that provides a range of up to 740km on the lenient Chinese CLTC figure.

Rapid charging is another highlight of the Tesla Model Y battler, as thanks to an 800V architecture the #5 can jump from 10-80 per cent charge status in just 15 minutes.

Within, there’s dual 13.0-inch screens that stretch across the dash. The navigation gets augmented reality, while ahead of the driver is a huge 25.6-inch head-up display.

There’s no word on how much power all variants will deliver but the flagship version will pump out an incredible 475kW from its dual motors.

Elsewhere, as well as being rugged the #5 should also be fun.

A built-in projector, mounted behind the Smart #5’s front grille, is capable of projecting a movie up to seven metres from its front bumper, transforming the #5 into a mobile drive-in theatre, while a 20-speaker Sennheiser audio system with removable soundbar means it can double as a mobile club.

If all that sounds exhausting, there’s fold-flat seating within to provide a king-size bed.

Like the Smart #1 and #3, LSH Auto will handle the distribution for the new flagship Smart #5.

Suzuki eVX

suzuki evx concept 5 am6e
suzuki evx concept 2 yb52

When’s it due? Mid-2025

Suzuki will launch its first-ever EV in Australia by the middle of 2025, a small SUV that manages to extract 500km from a small 60kWh battery, features a high-tech interior and decent ground clearance for off-road adventures.

Developed in collaboration with Toyota, the small SUV measures in at 4.3m long, 1.8m wide and stands at 1.6m tall.

Aimed squarely at the BYD Atto 3 and the Kia Niro, the Suzuki eVX is twinned with the new Toyota Urban Cruiser with both using the BYD Blade lithium-iron-phosphate battery.

More details will be released closer to the launch, including final powertrain specification, with the only fly in the ointment being its price.

According to early intel, the eVX will miss out on cut-throat pricing and be firmly positioned in the $40,000 to $50,000 price bracket.

Tembo Tusker

tembo tusker d 3 kwf7
tembo tusker d 5 shwx
tembo tusker d 4 1 di4r

When’s it due? 2025

The Chinese-built, Dutch-backed all-electric Tembo Tusker ute arrives later this year off the back of lucrative deals with mining companies, but when it touches down it will be pitched to private buyers as the best-value electric ute in Australia, with starting prices kicking off from $74,000.

Offered in single-cab and dual-cab pickup forms, each with the option of a 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrain and two battery types, entry-level variants of the Tusker ute bag a 65kWh lithium-ion battery pack that’s claimed to deliver up to 330km on a single charge.

Slot in the bigger 77kWh battery and the maximum range is boosted to 400km.

Those batteries power a 120kW/330Nm electric motor in the Tusker S and a marginally more potent (130kW/330Nm) motor in the Tusker D, with top speed limited to 120km/h.

Later on, a range-extender version might also be available, capable of up to 1000km with a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery.

Whichever you choose, the payload of the Tusker is 1000kg and it can tow up to 3000kg.

Full details will be released by the importer, VivoPower, shortly, but Tembo already has a fine reputation for EV utes among the industry, providing EV kits for utes like the Toyota HiLux for more than half a decade now, with local trials of 70 Series Toyota LandCruisers dating back to 2018 in Australia.

Tesla Model Q

tesla model q teaser 01 19nb

When’s it due? H1 2025 (maybe)

The affordable Tesla Model Q will be priced around $45,000, be based on the carmaker’s latest and greatest all-electric platform, and rival cars like the BYD Atto 3, claimed multiple leaks last year – but with plenty of conflicting reports surrounding the Model Q, it might arrive later.

What we do know is that much more affordable cars are coming that might (or might not) include stripped-out versions of both the Model 3 and Model Y tech, built for value-conscious buyers.

If the Model Q is among the mix of vehicles fast-tracked by the US brand in a bid to boost sales and profits, expect it to be 15 per cent smaller and 30 per cent lighter than the current Model 3, with the new car having an overall length of 3988mm.

Thanks to advanced production techniques the Model Q will also be cheaper to produce than the Model 3, potentially by up to 50 per cent.

The Model Q will be powered by a range of lithium-iron-phosphate batteries with buyers offered two sizes – a 53kWh unit and a larger 75kWh pack. Both single- and dual-motor configurations will be available.

With the bigger battery, expect the Model Q to cover up to 500km on a single charge, but only time will tell what’s in store for fans of the EV pioneer.

Tesla Model Y

tesla model y facelift 6 qa1g
tesla model y facelift 9 dru1
tesla model y facelift 13 nzm9

When’s it due? May 2025

The fresh-look, sleeker, smarter Tesla Model Y arrives this May. The good news is most models offer more range and are quicker than before, but the bad is you’ll pay a good $7500 extra for the updated mid-size SUV.

The Model Y range now kicks off at $63,400 plus ORCs for the entry-level rear-wheel-drive model grade, which can cover 466km (WLTP) between charges – 11km more than before.

The flagship Model Y Long Range, meanwhile, is $10,000 more ($73,400 plus ORCs), but adds a dual-motor drivetrain with all-wheel drive and a claimed range of 551km (+18km, WLTP).

The range figures come courtesy of improved aerodynamics as well as enhanced powertrains.

Benefits of the facelift include the addition of acoustic glass for a quieter journey and the introduction of much-needed softer suspension for enhanced comfort. The new car also boasts better steering responses, says Tesla.

Early ‘Launch Series’ Model Ys ride on new 20-inch Helix wheels and get special badges, puddle lamps and door sill plates, with Acceleration Boost offered on the Long Range AWD version.

Speaking of 0-100km/h dashes, the RWD now takes 5.9 seconds (1.0 second quicker), while the Long Range AWD takes a very brisk 4.3 seconds (0.7 second quicker), compared to before.

Inside, the central touchscreen is slightly larger at 15.4 inches (+0.4 inch) and runs a quicker, more powerful processor.

Unlike the Model 3’s steering-wheel indicator buttons, the 2025 Tesla Model Y keeps a steering-wheel-mounted indicator stalk, hinting at a U-turn by the brand.

Still the world’s fastest-selling EV, Tesla hopes the refreshed Model 3 and Model Y will help recapture some of the buyers lost to brands like BYD and help it hold onto its status as the world’s biggest EV brand.

Toyota bZ3X/bZ3C

When’s it due? 2025

Toyota has lagged the rest of the pack when it comes to EVs but will play catch up this year when it reveals the new Toyota bZ3X SUV and bZ3C SUV coupe.

Aimed squarely at more youthful buyers, both cars are set to arrive towards the end of this year and are not yet locked in for our market. They might even carry a ‘bZ5’ nameplate, but the big news is both have been developed by EV leader BYD.

Set to be inspired by the Toyota Sport Crossover that was shown off back in 2023, the new twins are likely to sit on an upgraded e-TNGA Toyota platform but come with a cutting-edge EV powertrain developed by BYD.

It’s not clear where the pair will be built but both cars will have a European suspension tune, hinting that Toyota wants its most advanced EVs yet to be a hit in markets outside of China, where the bZ3X/bZ3C will be made.

Volkswagen ID.2

When’s it due? H2 2025

The Polo-sized Volkswagen ID.2 arrives later this year and is set to combine a sub-$40,000 price tag, advanced tech, a 400km range, and space for up to five adults. It could be the German brand’s most compelling EV yet.

Built on Volkswagen’s heavily revised MEB Entry architecture, we already know the ID.2 will be strictly front-wheel drive and will be offered with a range of single-motor powertrains.

Once arrived the same platform and powertrains of the ID.2 will be shared with the Skoda Epiq and Cupra Raval, as well as possibly an Audi, before VW upsizes it to a small SUV that replaces the T-Cross.

Later on, an ID.2 GTI will also be offered, the VW appropriately reinventing the hot hatch for the electric age.

Already previewed by the well-received ID. GTI Concept, it could offer up to 250kW from a single motor, with an over-boost function that increases peak power briefly to as much as 320kW for rapid overtakes.

With that kind of firepower, a 0-100km/h sprint of around 4.0 seconds could be possible.

Within, the ID.2 will feature the German auto giant’s next-generation infotainment system that will be supplemented by the return of physical buttons – following EuroNCAP demands that physical buttons will be required to receive the full five stars for safety.

Volkswagen ID.4/ID.5

When’s it due? Early 2025

After dragging its heels for more than four years, the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 finally fleshes out the brand’s EV offering Down Under.

Created originally to spearhead the brand’s attack on the Tesla Model Y, the ID.4 wagon and ID.5 SUV coupe will command a premium over its US opposition, but nowhere near as high as the originally $75,000 list price mooted.

From launch the entry-level ID.4 gets a single motor outputting 210kW/545Nm, driving the rear wheels for a 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds.

AC charging can be conducted at 11kW and DC charging at up to 135kW.

If that’s not fast enough, both the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX should satisfy with their 250kW/679Nm and 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.4 seconds.

Making up for the punchy pricing will be generous levels of standard kit, including a large 12.9-inch infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, matrix LED headlamps, 19-inch wheels, tri-zone climate control and VW’s latest driver assist tech.

Just a month or two after their introduction here, Volkswagen is primed to comprehensively overhaul the both the ID.4 and ID.5 with a new model that will bring faster charging, more range and even better efficiency and performance, which should make the VW twin SUVs even more desirable.

Volvo ES90

When’s it due? 2025

After disappearing at an alarming rate, large sedans are making a comeback thanks to EV powertrains and with lower, sleeker bodies than the common SUV, they come with some of the longest ranges in the business.

This year the S90-replacing Volvo ES90 will arrive, following the Audi A6 e-tron’s trend of switching from a three-box sedan to a four-door coupe silhouette, while the latest Scandinavian sits on the same SPA2 architecture as the flagship EX90 and shares its giant 111kWh battery pack.

The fastest, most expensive versions also come with a peak power output of 380kW that will serve up sports car levels of performance.

An entry rear-drive 210kW version will be capable of travelling more than 700km on a single charge.

Tipped to measure in at 4990mm long, 1945mm wide and standing 1547mm tall, with a huge 3102mm wheelbase – despite being around 100mm shorter than the S90 it replaces – the big Volvo will offer space within to rival much larger limos and have the comfort and luxury to match.

Built in China, it’s thought Australia should get its first ES90 sedans towards the end of this year, when it will arrive with pricing to match both the Audi and the BMW i5.

XPeng G9

When’s it due? 2025

The second model to follow the hugely impressive XPeng G6, the bigger G9 is a larger mid-size SUV that’s been on sale in China since late 2021.

The G9 measures 140mm longer than the G6 at 4891mm and stands more upright. However, unlike the similarly sized (4915mm) Leapmotor C16 also expected in Australia in 2025, the G9 does not have a third row of seats.

In China the G9 comes with both single- and dual-motor powertrains, the latter claiming an output of 405kW/717Nm and a 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds.

A 96kWh CATL lithium-ion battery pack provides a claimed range of up to 570km on the WLTP test protocol while an 800V electrical system allows DC fast charging of up to 300kW, seeing it benefit from some of the fastest charging in the business.

There’s no word yet on pricing but the more spacious, family-friendly G9 is priced from around $A53,000 in China

Zeekr 7X

When’s it due? 2025

This year Zeekr will encroach ever further into the space occupied by German premium brands, when it launches the most expensive and luxurious versions of the Zeekr 7X – an EV that outperforms the BMW X5M but should cost around $20,000 less than the equivalent BMW iX and Benz EQE.

Measuring in at 4825mm long, 1930mm wide, up to 1666mm tall and sitting on a 2925mm wheelbase, the 7X is longer and taller than a Model Y, although not quite as wide.

Based on the same SEA platform as the rest of the Geely Group’s dedicated EVs, it will be offered with a familiar array of single- and dual-motor powertrains.

Entry versions will come with a single e-motor that musters 150kW/350Nm and stretches right up to 475kW/710Nm for the fastest BMW iX rivals.

Two batteries are earmarked for the 7X: a 76kWh lithium iron phosphate unit and a bigger 100kWh nickel manganese cobalt power pack that’s set to provide more than 600km of WLTP range.

There’s no word on pricing, but the bigger and more luxurious Zeekr 7X is likely to be priced above the Tesla Model Y and come with lots more tech.
