NEW FALCON: a question of controls

It's often the little things that matter when a new vehicle is released -- like what the key looks like or how a handbrake settles in the console.

Ford says it has paid special attention to the little things in the development of the FG Falcon range -- like how the cruise control works and how the door handles operate.

In the case of the former, the FG range features Set-Point Cruise Control for the first time.

Facilitated by the FG platform's new Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the Set-Point Cruise system reduces the number of control inputs required and gives the driver the choice of one-touch speed setting or the ability to fine tune or preset cruise in 1 and 10km/h increments.

The new PCM also incorporates One-touch start for all petrol model FGs fitted with automatic transmission. If the driver lets go of the ignition key before the engine has fully started, the PCM ensures the start operation is completed.

Other improvements thanks to the new PCM include: better 'limp home' functionality; more accurate fuel figures including a DTE (distance to empty function); and changes to the immobiliser.

Ford says the feel, function and location of major controls and systems have been optimised across the board on the new Falcon. Particular attention has been paid to providing "a more intuitive feel for major controls and reduced operating efforts," the company claims.

New Euro-style pull-type door handles are used and the external boot release is a soft-touch pad on the underside of the boot lid 'garnish'.

Inside gearlever and handbrake positions have been optimised and, as outlined elsewhere, lever throw and effort reduced.
