Ferrari has begun teasing a new model that's tipped to be the new Ferrari 296 Spider via its social media channels ahead of its unveiling on April 19.
Already spotted testing, the new Ferrari 296 Spider is thought to feature a folding hard-top roof rather than a lighter and cheaper fabric roof.
Despite that, thanks to lightweight materials that will include aluminium and carbon-fibre reinforced plastics, a small weight penalty of around 25-30kg is expected.
Like the GTB coupe, the rear-wheel drive Ferrari 296 Spider is set to be powered by the same 120-degree twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 that revs to 8500rpm, develops 487kW and is matched as standard with the SF90’s new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Combined with a plug-in hybrid system comprising a 7.45kWh lithium-ion battery and a 123kW electric motor, total outputs are 610kW – 80kW more than the larger F8 Tributo powered by a 530kW/770Nm 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 – and 740Nm of torque.
Ferrari claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of 2.9 seconds for the 1470kg (dry) 296 GTB coupe – figures the slightly heavier Spider should also closely match.
The drop-top 296 should also offer a pure-electric range of up to 25km at speeds of up to 135km/h.
Stay tuned, as Ferrari will reveal all on April 19, perhaps including what sort of premium the convertible will command over the substantial $551,800 (plus on-road costs) price tag it charges for the Ferrari 296 GTB in Australia.
