Ford has announced it will stage the global reveal of its next-generation Mustang in six locations around the world – including Sydney – on December 5.
The news was revealed in an invitation to selected media today, when Ford announced it will stage a simultaneous global reveal in Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Barcelona and Shanghai.
The worldwide reveal is expected to be a video-only affair outside Dearborn, Ford’s home base near Detroit, before the new Mustang’s official global public premiere at the Detroit motor show in January.
The sixth-generation Mustang was previously confirmed to appear this year, following the release of technical information to selected media under embargo in late October.
Ford confirmed in August that the new Mustang will be sold in Australia for the first time since 2003.
The first ‘global Mustang’ to be produced in both left- and right-hand drive is expected to go on sale Down Under in 2015, priced from as low as $45,000 in 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol form.
A circa-320kW V8-powered Mustang is also certain to be sold here, although it’s unclear if the mid-range 230kW 3.7-litre V6 version – or the rumoured 500kW supercharged 5.8-litre Shelby GT500 -- will be made available to Australians.
The Mustang celebrates its 50th anniversary year in 2014 and the Mk6 will ride on an all-new platform and wear dramatic new sheetmetal inspired by the 2011 EVOS concept.
Ford’s first completely overhauled pony car since 2005 will initially be available only in 2+2 coupe form, but will again be joined by a convertible.
More than 8.5 million Mustangs have been sold since April 1964.
The Mustang will become Ford Australia’s performance flagship following the axing of the Broadmeadows-built Falcon – and XR6 and XR8 variants thereof – by 2016.
