New Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally unleashed

Zero-emissions off-road racer-inspired EV gets special aero and raised ride height but no more power

Ford has unwrapped the new Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, previewing a real production car that will go on sale before the end of this year.

No official details have been released but it’s thought the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally will feature the same powertrain as the Premium AWD version of the upcoming electric SUV range, in which case it would be driven by two electric motors that, combined, produce 258kW/580Nm and be capable of 0-100km/h acceleration in 5.8 seconds.

Powered by a 91kWh battery, the Rally version should be capable of covering around 549km between charges.

Mirroring what Porsche did when it created the 911 Dakar, the Mustang Mach-E features a new front bumper with integrated splitter, a new closed-off grille sporting a pair of fog lights within it, and a red recovery hook.

Riding fractionally higher than regular Mach-E models, the Rally also sports a set of all-terrain tyres wrapped around white motorsport-derived alloy wheels.

At the rear, there’s a World Rally Championship-inspired spoiler and a pair of new mudguards.

It’s thought there have been further modifications to make the battery-electric Ford SUV faster and more capable in the dirt, including extra under-body protection including a front and rear bash plate.

More details will be released in the coming months, including whether or not the Blue Oval will produce a motorsport version. The new off-road performance EV was driven up the famous Goodwood hill climb by former WRC champ Ott Tanak.

The standard Ford Mustang Mach-E arrives in Australian showrooms in Select, Premium and GT guises priced from under $80,000 by the end of this year, but the Rally version is yet to be confirmed for local release.
