There are just a few weeks left before the new-generation 2023 Ford Mustang makes its global debut at the Detroit auto show and the folks over at Motor1 have given the world one of its best unofficial looks yet at the Blue Oval’s all-new pony car.
The unofficial previews come in the form of a trio of renders based on the myriad spy images and leaks we’ve seen over the past few months, and the Motor1 renders look almost identical to the leaked images published by Ford Authority.
While the overall silhouette will remain largely the same as the current S550 Mustang coupe, the S650 is widely anticipated to take on a far more aggressive demeanour – especially in GT guise – with a squarer front fascia design with a considerably larger grille.
The boofier nose will more than likely be flanked on either side by a narrow but blocky headlight design, with V8s set to be separated from four-cylinder EcoBoost versions by a flush-sitting bonnet scoop and bigger intakes.
Lurking underneath that scooped bonnet will be the familiar 5.0-litre ‘Coyote’ V8, which is being tipped by some to develop close to 373kW (500hp), without the help of force induction or electrification.
Superchargers will undoubtedly feature on the inevitable Shelby variants, but at this early stage they still aren’t on the radar for our market.
The turbo fours will also likely get a power bump of some description (up from 224kW/441Nm), with transmission duties widely expected to remain handled by a familiar six-speed manual and 10-speed automatic for both engine configurations.
With the S650’s reveal in the US set to take place at 8:00pm local time on September 14 (10:00am AEST on September 15), Ford is working overtime to stir up the Stateside hype by organising two consecutive Mustang cruises for existing owners in a sort of pilgrimage to the event.
The first of these cruises is called ‘The Drive Home’ and will span nine states from Tacoma, Washington, to the Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, with drivers setting off on September 9 and arriving on the day of the reveal.
Starting at 5:00pm that same day, ‘The Stampede’ will see drivers burble across Michigan to Detroit for the big reveal and then attend an after-party, however, registrations are reportedly limited.
As reported previously by carsales, a mid-September reveal points nicely to the long-rumoured March 2023 production start and, in turn, an Australian launch in the second half of next year.
The reveal and production start also lines up with the launch of the Gen3 Supercar era, which will get under way in Newcastle as of March 12 next year…
Ford Australia’s battle with consumer demand for the current-generation Mustang has been extensively documented over the past 12 months or so, and while Ford is yet to float any potential production outputs or sales goals, it’s more than likely that customer wait times for the new model will blow out rather rapidly as affordable V8s continue to disappear from our market.
