It seems the new-generation 2023 Ford Mustang’s reveal might be just around the corner,
suggesting the long-awaited global debut will take place at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in September. The report cites “a person with knowledge” of the launch plans who alluded to a production start in the first half of next year, which from a local point of view backs up previous expectations of the model arriving locally sometime next year – perhaps too late to make its Aussie racing debut as part of the new ‘Gen3’ Supercar era from 2023.
Speculation about the possible electrification of the iconic muscle car and its potential move to all-wheel drive as part of a shift to the Explorer’s new RWD/AWD platform, but both of these scenarios appear to have been put to bed… for the time being at least.
Anticipated to be more of a rework than an all-new model, the seventh-generation S650 Mustang is now tipped to ride on an updated version of the existing S550 platform and even carry over both the four- and eight-cylinder powertrains, though both will undoubtedly be tweaked in some manner.
Even the most recent spy images out of the US have revealed little about the new model’s appearance, but leaked images posted to the Ford Authority website gave us our first unofficial look back in April.
To recap, the S650 will look reasonably similar to the S550 but with a squarer and less angry front bumper on the base models, while the GT and high-end variants will have the aggression amped up considerably via a larger grille and front intake, and a flush-sitting bonnet scoop.
The current Mustang has been in high demand Down Under ever since it launched here in 2015, with wait times consistently exceeding six months more recently.
If the new model does debut in Detroit, it will be a triumphant return for the iconic motor show, which has been thwarted by the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years with both the 2020 and 2021 editions being cancelled.
