New Ford Mustang V8 previewed

Sound clip of next-gen Mustang confirms V8 will still lurk underneath Ford pony car as world debut looms

Ford has confirmed its next-generation 2023 Ford Mustang will keep its V8, releasing a clip of the engine revving ahead of the new pony car’s unveiling in North America on September 14.

Possessing a muscular-sounding growl, during the audio clip it’s even possible to hear the bent-eight pop cheekily on the overrun before spinning up its tyres during a quick take-off.

There’s still no confirmation of what exactly will power the next Mustang, but expect an electrified version of the 5.0-litre ‘Coyote’ V8 to star, with power boosted to around 375kW.

We’ve already caught the seventh-gen S650 Ford Mustang testing and know the overall silhouette will remain largely the same as the current coupe.

However, the S650 is widely anticipated to take on a far more aggressive demeanour – especially in GT guise – with a squarer front fascia design with a considerably larger grille.

It’s also set to adopt a pair of narrower LED headlights, while a different bonnet design will help distinguish Mustang muscle cars powered by the V8 and the less powerful (but more efficient) EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo models.

Later on, supercharged versions of the new electrified V8 will be offered, likely to be badged Shelby.

Like before, we expect both a six-speed manual to be offered alongside the 10-speed auto developed in collaboration with General Motors.

As reported, a mid-September reveal points nicely to the long-rumoured March 2023 production start and, in turn, an Australian launch in the second half of next year.

Stay tuned, as all will be revealed on September 14 in the US (10:00am AEST September 15).
