Ford has launched new Trail versions of its Transit and Transit Custom vans to appeal to buyers who want a tougher load carrier.
Created to be 'rough-road capable', the new Ford Transit Trail pinches its 'F-O-R-D' grille from the Ranger Raptor and adds black cladding on the wheel-arches, side panels and front and rear bumpers.
A set of roof rails, running boards and new 16-inch black alloy wheels complete the changes.
Inside the new Trail there's leather seat trim and a heated front screen, plus power-folding mirrors and automatic headlights, all aimed at lifestyle buyers.
Mechanically, the Trail misses out on a raised ride height but does come standard with a mechanical limited-slip Quaife differential that, combined with a recalibrated traction control system, promises more traction in mud, snow, sand or gravel.
For those who frequently drive out in the bush, an optional all-wheel drive system will be able to shuffle up to 50 per cent of torque to the front wheels.
Available as either a panel van or double-cab in van body, the new Transit Trail comes with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with up to 136kW.
In markets like the UK, the Transit Custom Trail has been priced from £30,000 ($A55,000).
There's no word yet if Ford Australia plans to import the new Trail version of either Transit model.
