Geely’s all-new Galaxy brand has released full details of its large 2024 Galaxy E8, including a level of aerodynamic efficiency that’s claimed to make it one of the slipperiest production cars ever produced.
Claimed to deliver a drag coefficient of just 0.199Cd, the new Galaxy E8 sedan through the air easier than class-leaders like the Mercedes-Benz EQS (0.200Cd), as well as the NIO ET7 (0.208Cd) and Tesla Model S Plaid (0.208Cd).
Only the tiny experimental two-seat 2013 Volkswagen XL1 matches the E8’s 0.199Cd figure, although occupants in that car had to sit in a staggered formation within its striking teardrop shape.
Revealed ahead of its launch at the 2023 Guangzhou Auto Show on November 17, before it goes on sale in China before the end of this year, the Galaxy E8 makes no such compromises to achieve its stunning aerodynamics.
Based on Geely's SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture), the new large Chinese electric sedan measures in at 5010mm long, 1920mm wide and stands 1465mm tall on a long 2925mm wheelbase.
The E8 features a fastback shape and has frameless doors, pop-out door-handles and wind tunnel-honed wheel covers that slashe drag.
Up front, ultra-slim LED Matrix headlights are smooth enough to not cause wind disturbance, says Geely, while wide but thin tail-lights have been designed to cause minimal wind turbulence.
Inside, there’s a two-spoke steering wheel and a stunning 45-inch 8K-resolution screen that stretches across the dash.
Said to be coated with an anti-fingerprint, anti-glare, dustproof and waterproof layer, the screen is run by a super powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip.
If the multimedia screen is not big enough there’s also an additional 25.6-inch head-up display to reduce driver distraction.
The centre console, featuring a rotary control knob, also incorporates a 50W wireless charging panel and contains a thin strip of six physical shortcut buttons.
Rounding out the high-tech cabin is a full-length panoramic roof and a 256-colour ambient lighting system.
The Galaxy E8 will be available from launch in China in either rear-wheel drive or AWD forms.
The base single-motor rear-drive version is driven by a 203kW electric motor fed power from a 62kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. Claimed range is an impressive 550km (NEDC) for such a big car.
A long-range version with a larger 76kWh battery is said to boost the range to 665km (NEDC).
The dual-motor version gets an 800-volt electrical architecture (in place of the two-wheel drive’s 400-volt system) and a 167kW front electric motor in addition to a 314kW rear-mounted motor.
Fitted with a ternary lithium battery, the AWD E8 is claimed to offer an impressive 665km of range (NEDC), while top speed increases to 210km/h.
Thanks to the 800-volt architecture, Geely says that a five-minute DC fast-charge can add as much as 180km of range.
Pre-orders will begin in China following the E8’s unveiling. It’s still not known whether the new Galaxy brand will venture Down Under, but it is likely.
Geely Auto has previously said it’s interested in coming to the Australian market and another Geely Group brand, Lynk & Co, is expected here by 2025.
