New Honda Civic Type R wait list almost two years long

And delivery delays for Honda Civic and HR-V hybrids are now as long as nine months

Buyers of the new 2023 Honda Civic Type R face delivery waiting times of almost two years as Honda Australia grapples with overwhelming demand for the all-new hot hatch amid interrupted supply chains and the global semi-conductor shortage

The Japanese brand has confirmed the wait list for the formidable new high-performance five-door now stretches out to about 20 months, meaning those who place a new order now won’t receive their cars until the second half of 2024.

Honda Australia won’t say exactly how many orders it holds for the new Type R, which will be officially launched in Australia in February, but previously confirmed a local allocation of 500 vehicles in 2023.

But that demand exceeds supply by a considerable margin, despite a $72,600 drive-away price tag that makes it one of the most expensive Japanese small cars ever launched in Down Under and easily the most expensive – and most powerful – front-drive hot hatch sold here.

But it isn’t just the range-topper that’s in high demand; wait times for both the electrified Honda Civic e:HEV LX and the Honda HR-V e:HEV L have slipped out to nine months, which actually marks a slight improvement for the latter (down from up to 10 months).

Honda says it’s constantly monitoring the situation and “continuously seeking to shorten wait times, be transparent and communicate with our customers and secure additional e:HEV production wherever possible”.

“Honda Australia has a good supply of non-e:HEV models, such as all CR-V grades, resulting in shorter delivery times,” a local spokesperson said.

“The overall state of e:HEV models and the all-new Civic Type R however is tight.

“We monitor the situation regularly and are doing what we can to secure more stock, but we forecast having ongoing stock constraints throughout the first half of 2023.”

The current-generation Honda CR-V is now comfortably the oldest product in Honda’s local line-up and due for replacement later this year by an all-new model that will also push upmarket in nearly every respect, thereby making room for the smaller new Honda ZR-V.

A new Accord was also due this year but is now in doubt as the local passenger car market continues to decline.
