New Honda Integra to be five-door model only

Reborn Integra confirmed as practical five-door liftback rather than sportier two-door coupe

Honda fans hoping for a revival of the popular two-door Honda Integra will be disappointed by a fresh teaser image released overnight that shows the reborn performance car has been created as five-door liftback.

Unlike the famed two-door coupe design of previous generations, the fifth-generation 2022 Honda Integra will be a “premium sport compact with a striking five-door design” when the nameplate returns after a 15-year hiatus, according to Honda’s US division Acura.

It’s still a sleek-looking coupe-style design, with the roofline flowing seamlessly into the rear-end.

A tiny gloss black boot lid spoiler can also be seen, while ‘Integra’ lettering is etched into front bumper under the tail-lights in similar fashion to the front-end treatment seen on the first teaser image released earlier this year.

The tail-lights also have a V-shaped LED signature that ties in neatly with the daytime running lights (DRLs) integrated into the headlights.

Despite the fact two-door versions of previous-gen Tegs were perhaps the better-known body style, it’s not the first time Honda/Acura has stuck an Integra badge on a five-door body.

The first-generation Integra (1985-89) was offered as a two-door coupe, four-door sedan and five-door liftback, while both the second- and third-gen models could be had in two-door coupe or four-door sedan body styles.

Of course, there’s a possibility the new Integra will also spawn a two-door model during its lifecycle, but don’t hold your breath.

And as we’ve reported, there are no plans for right-hand drive production of the 2022 Honda Integra.

Instead, Aussie Honda fans can take some comfort in the knowledge the next-gen Honda Civic Type-R has been confirmed for local launch next year.

The new Integra is set for a mid-2022 launch in North America and will likely share the same underpinnings as the latest Civic, meaning a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive layout is on the cards.
