New HSV getting closer

European-sourced twin-turbo still high on the agenda for local hot-rod shop

These are the latest shots of the new Opel Insignia OPC undergoing testing at Germany's Nurburgring and if HSV has its way it will be tearing up Australian racetracks soon. Holden's performance arm has made no secret of its desire to add this mid-sizer to its local arsenal (more here).

Since that report in December the trend towards downsizing has continued, making the Insignia an increasingly appealing proposition as the company looks for alternatives to its Commodore-heavy fleet.

"We're looking at the program. But it has to stack up on price," says HSV spokesman, Simon Frost.

"We're very interested in it."

Power for the beefed-up Insignia comes from a twin-turbo V6 producing 224kW that drives through all four wheels via Saab's torque-splitting differential. Wider guards house bigger brakes and wheels, expected to be available with both 19-inch and optional 20-inch, as well as large air-intakes and rear spoiler demonstrate the car's serious intent.

The performance Insignia is being developed in Germany by Opel Performance Centre but there will be a right-hand drive version of the car built for Vauxhall using the VXR branding.  As these photos show the car is production ready with a release date expected sometime in the European summer.
