Toyota has added a new colour, Retro Blue, to its colour palette for the FJ40-inspired FJ Cruiser off-roader. The new option is offered in addition to six existing colours.
That’s not quite all: The funky FJ Cruiser has also been given a new set of seven-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels, around which are wrapped the same 265/70R17 tyres fitted previously.
The four-door tribute to the iconic FJ40 LandCruiser that was Toyota’s off-road image-leader from the 1960s through to the 1970s has exceeded the local company’s expectations since it was introduced here in 2011.
The sales tally to date is approaching 7000 vehicles, or better than two times the original predictions by Toyota’s market strategists, based on sales of 100 FJ Cruisers a month. The rate is currently running at more than 200 per month.
The two-tonne FJ Cruiser is powered by Toyota’s 200kW/380Nm DOHC 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine, driving a part-time 4WD system (with an electronic rear differential lock) through a five-speed automatic transmission. Fuel capacity is 159 litres and the combined fuel consumption is quoted at 11.4L/100km. No diesel is available.
The all-coil suspension comprises an independent double wishbone arrangement at the front, and a live, five-link system at the rear. The ladder-frame FJ Cruiser has the best departure and breakover angles in the Toyota lineup, and is second only to the 70 Series LandCruiser in terms of approach angle. Towing capacity is rated at 750kg unbraked and 2250kg braked.
The single model only FJ Cruiser is priced at $47,900 before on-road costs.
