Pricing and specification details have been revealed for the 2021 Hyundai Staria, a new people-mover designed to do battle with the Kia Carnival.
Described as new from the ground up, the eight-seater Staria is set to reach Australian showrooms from August with a base price of $48,500 plus on-road costs.
The Staria effectively replaces the Hyundai iMax in the Korean brand’s local range, sharing its platform with the Santa Fe SUV.
The fresh origins mean that, unlike the iMax, the Staria will be available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive guise.
Wrapped in a curvaceous mono-cell body that’s said to resemble a spaceship and is punctuated by enormous dark-tinted panoramic windows on all four sides, the Staria also reveals the futuristic look of the closely-related new Hyundai iLoad commercial van.
Three different Staria trim levels will be available in Australia, each with a choice of either an all-wheel drive 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine or a front-driven 3.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol V6 – mirroring the Santa Fe.
The base model, simply known as Staria, starts at $48,500 plus ORCs in V6 form, with the diesel option adding $3000.
The mid-tier Staria Elite petrol starts at $56,500 plus ORCs, while the flagship Staria Highlander petrol is priced from $63,500 plus ORCs. Diesel adds $3000 at these levels too.
Entry versions of the Staria feature 18-inch wheels with full-size spare, automatic LED headlights with daytime running lights, keyless entry with remote window function, heated and power-folding mirrors, manual air-conditioning with separate vents in the second and third rows, four rear USB ports and 16 cup holders.
Base model infotainment comprises an 8.0-inch centre touch-screen display with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, matched to a separate 4.2-inch display in the instrument cluster. A wireless phone charger is also standard.
Staria models higher in the food chain utilise a superior 10.25-inch touch-screen display with native satellite navigation, leather-appointed seats, automatic climate control, rear window blinds, digital radio and numerous other upgrades.
As for engine choices, the 3.6-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine produces 200kW/331Nm and is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission for a claimed fuel consumption figure of 10.5L/100km.
The 2.2-litre diesel develops 130kW/430Nm and is likewise paired to an eight-speed auto. Claimed mileage is 8.2L/100km.
Braked towing capacity is rated at 2.5 tonnes across the range.
Not yet rated by ANCAP, the Staria range is fitted with seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with junction turn assist, blind spot collision avoidance, speed limit assist, lane guidance, multi-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and rear cross traffic alert.
Additionally, safe exit assist and a 3D view surround view monitor are limited to Elite variants, while a Blind-Spot View Monitor that is projected into the vehicle’s instrument cluster is confined to flagship Highlander variants.
The Staria is backed by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, while servicing costs are capped at $360 for every 12 months or 15,000km of ownership, according to Hyundai.
The MPV measures 5253mm long, 1970mm wide and 1990mm high, and rides on a 3273mm wheelbase.
Five different exterior colours are available: Abyss Black, Graphite Grey, Moonlight Blue, Olivine Grey and Gaia Brown.
