Lamborghini President Stephan Winkelmann has given himself a birthday present most boys could only dream of by taking the covers off the next year’s LP570-4 Super Trofeo racecar.
Revealing the Italian supercar brand’s new Gallardo racer on his birthday yesterday (October 18), Mr Winkelmann promised the new one-make racer would be faster, better balanced and easier to drive than the current Super Trofeo.
It achieves 50 per cent better cooling thanks to its big front intakes and has up to 160kg more downforce when it’s set up for slower tracks, though 128kg more aero grip is the norm.
And, as Lamborghini design boss Felippo Perini revealed, the Super Trofeo does not follow the look of the 2013 Gallardo LP560-4 road car.
“It’s the other way around. We did it this way first, because we wanted it to have better aero and better thermal management,” the design director admitted.
After starting in Europe in 2009, the Super Trofeo championship is now running to packed grids and has spun off a separate series in Asia as well. It is also planning to expand into the US within the next two years.
