New-look Skoda Scout

Skoda has released an updated version of its Octavia wagon-based softroader, the Scout, which we reviewed in June.

The $39,990 price (not including dealer or government charges) of the Scout hasn't changed but a redesigned front end with new-look grille and headlamps give the vehicle a more modern countenance.

The Scout joins the rest of the Octavia range for a mid-life upgrade, which brings with it interior upgrades to the centre console, an eight-speaker CD/MP3 stereo and adds an AQS (air quality sensor) to keep the cabin free of pollutants.

Xenon lights with dynamic angle control are optional, while the car's all-wheel drive setup and 180mm ground clearance provide the vehicle with improved off-road ability.

The all-wheel-drive system is a fourth generation Haldex clutch which can divert power to the rear axle if it detect slippage at the front end.

Along with flared wheelarches that contribute to its more rugged appearance, the Skoda Scout also gets an underbody sump guard to "significantly enhance its off-road suitability".

Power for the AWD Skoda comes from the VAG's 2.0 TDI, which ouputs 103kW/320Nm. The four-cylinder turbodiesel engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Like the other wagons in the Skoda Octavia range, boot space of 580 litres opens up to 1620 litres when the back seats are folded down.
