New Mahindra Scorpio clocks Simpson Desert record run

Australia’s most affordable large diesel 4x4 SUV sets Guinness World Record for a Simpson crossing

The new 2023 Mahindra Scorpio has become the fastest production vehicle to cross the Simpson Desert, conquering the 385km sandpit in a Guinness World Record-verified time of 13:21.05h.

Undertaken during March, the record-breaking Scorpio run was achieved by professional drivers Gene Corbett and Ben Robinson, with the vehicle unmodified save for the addition of a UHF radio and a set of roof racks.

In announcing the record today, Mahindra said it was testament to the Scorpio’s six-month Australian testing and development program.

“This is an incredible feat and is a true testament to the Scorpio’s unbeatable combination of high-end engineering, performance capability and durability,” said Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd international operations boss Sachin Arolkar.

“We are proud to have pushed the boundaries of what is possible with this vehicle, and we cannot wait for Australian enthusiasts to experience the thrill that Scorpio brings.”

Mahindra said key to the Scorpio’s success across the Simpson was its 4XPLOR terrain management system, but there’s little doubt the 227mm of ground clearance, relatively compact stature and resulting 2085kg tare weight played key roles as well.

Under the bonnet is a 129kW/400Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, paired exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission that drives all four wheels via a selectable 4x4 system.

A low-range transfer case is on hand for when the going gets steep while extra traction is provided by an automatically locking rear differential.
