The second-generation Mercedes-AMG A45 will resume its place atop the hot hatch power charts if an insurance website leak is any guide.
Online insurance provider HUK24 seemingly lifted the lid on the German car-maker’s hotly anticipated creation overnight after examples of the flagship Mercedes-AMG A-Class were registered by the car-maker for road use in Germany in December.
Upon filling out the website’s online quotation form, users are presented with two different tunes of power sourced from the A45’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, driven through all four wheels.
The 'base' A45 will produce 285kW, while the higher spec version (typically denoted by an S within the AMG nomenclature) will purportedly produce 310kW.
Although officially unconfirmed, the details align with recent sentiment from AMG boss Tobias Moers, who happily prophesised a power output in excess of 300kW last year. In any case, both variants offer a healthy bump over the current model's 280kW spread.
Initial estimates surmise a 0-100km/h time of around four seconds on the next-gen hot hatch, possibly less.
What’s more, the manufacturer has already teased a new all-wheel drive system that support power slides, drifting and donuts.
While there is little else known about the a car AMG insiders are referring to as 'The Predator', the A45's newfound output would thrust it above the 294kW Audi RS3 and even the 302kW BMW M2 Competition in the small performance car power stakes.
While visually, the A45 is set to have minimal differentiation to the existing A35 middling variant, underneath it will benefit from unique chassis settings and adjustable damping that could likely yield a more compliant road ride than the predecessor.
A wider front track and other underbody changes will support the A45’s newfound power credentials.
There is also scope for AMG to adopt the nine-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission familiar with the regular A-Class.
Australian arrival details of the new Mercedes-AMG A45 hot hatch remain scarce, but initial estimates point to a likely 2020 model year landing.
