Mercedes-Benz has announced the arrival of its new ML 63 AMG, a car it says offers "efficiency and performance, exclusivity and a superlative driving experience".
Powered by an AMG-sourced 5.5-litre twin turbocharged V8, the new high output ML outputs 386kW and 700Nm, an increase of 11kW and 70Nm respectively over the outgoing model. Available optionally with an AMG Performance package, ML 63 AMG can be boosted to an attractive 410kW and 760Nm. This difference in output results from an increase in the maximum charge pressure from 1.0 to 1.3 bar.
Utilsiing spray-guided direct injection, piezo injectors and four valves per cylinder, the muscular unit also incorporates technologies designed to better fuel economy, such as air-water charge air cooling, an all-aluminium crankcase and idle start-stop system. The NEDC combined average consumption figure for the ML 63 AMG is just 11.8L/100km -- a 28 per cent improvement on its predecessor -- while CO2 emissions are unchanged at 276g/km.
Performance figures are also improved, the two variants accelerating from 0-100km/h in 4.8 and 4.7 seconds respectively. Both are electronically limited to a top speed of 250km/h.
The newly developed ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll mitigation joins a broad list of standard equipment, which includes a carbon fibre engine cover, red painted brake callipers and AMG Performance steering wheel finished in nappa leather.
"Like its predecessors, the new ML 63 AMG sets new standards in terms of performance, exclusivity and a superlative driving experience – plus the efficiency factor, which is acquiring ever greater emphasis at Mercedes-AMG,” explained Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG. "As the inventor of the high-performance SUV, we remain true to the philosophy which we introduced in 1999 with the ML 55 AMG and continued in 2005 with the ML 63 AMG."
The new Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG will be launched in Australia in June 2012. Pricing and final specification will be advised closer to launch.
