New MG4 packs in 330kW EV power

Incoming Aussie line-up of MG’s electric small car set to be topped by dual-motor AWD weapon

The all-new 2023 MG4 electric hatchback is drawing closer to Australia, and the Chinese brand has just revealed its full home-market model range that includes a dual-motor all-wheel drive flagship that pumps out 330kW of power.

Known as the MG Mulan in China, the stylish new MG4 is primed to go head-to-head with an equally all-new electric hatchback from BYD that’s based on the BYD Dolphin and was driven by carsales earlier this week ahead of its launch next year.

MG Australia recently confirmed that the 2023 MG4 was similarly due Down Under in the first half of next year, having already made its debut in Europe with a variety of rear-drive powertrain options – and the promise of more.

The EV hatch has also been seen testing in Australia as part of its preparation for local homologation.

Now, those higher-performance details have come to light on MG’s Chinese website, where four models are shown across three different powertrains topped by the 330kW/600Nm dual-motor AWD set-up.

Shown in a ‘Triumph Edition’ model grade, the top-shelf MG4 can rocket from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds, according to the car-maker, which places it well ahead of the Tesla Model 3 Long Range (4.4sec) and within sight of the Tesla Model 3 Performance (3.3sec).

The MG4’s strong performance is backed up by a claimed CLTC driving range of 460km, thanks to its 64kWh ternary lithium battery.

This compares to the single-motor versions, which when using a comparable battery produce up to 150kW/250Nm and offer a longer 520km range.

Lower-tier versions that rely on a 51kWh lithium iron phosphate battery can muster 125kW/250Nm and run for a claimed 425km between top-ups.

All MG4 models ride on a MacPherson strut front and five-link rear suspension. Alloy wheel sizes range from 16 to 18 inches, depending on the variant.

MG Australia is still to confirm the local model launch range, with a spokesperson telling carsales today that information would be “announced in due course”.

Standard equipment highlights across the Chinese range includes a D-shaped steering wheel, automatic climate control, MG’s latest Smart Operating System infotainment suite accessed via a 10.25-inch touch-screen, keyless entry and start, 7.0-inch digital cockpit and five drive modes.

Higher grades such as the Triumph Edition include heated front seats, an air purification system, power-adjustable wing mirrors, two-tone roof, double-spoke rear wing and premium name-brand tyres.

Seven colours are being offered in China, comprising Road to Power (pink), Tileable Blue, High Cold Grey, Loyalty White, Knight Silver, China Red and the Turn Green hero colour.

Expect the local palette to vary given the European MG4’s hero colour is a vibrant and eye-catching orange.

MG has been going big on its electrification efforts recently, so much so it’s fuelled reports of the brand going all-electric by 2027.

The MG Australia spokesperson was unable to confirm those reports.
