The local 'prestige' small car segment has become more interesting with the addition of a new, cheaper MINI model.
The Ray MINI starts at $25,500, undercutting the Cooper hatch by over $6000. It's also over $4000 cheaper than current segment darling, the Audi A1.
Based on the entry model MINI One available in Europe, the Ray comes standard with a six-speed manual and the range's powerful (72kW/153Nm) 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine.
The more-affordable MINI is identified by coloured mirror surrounds and scuttles, and striking multi-spoke hubcaps. Side mirrors and scuttles can be ordered in a range of standout colours including Alien Green or Energy Pink and MINI offers a wheel upgrade to the alloy five-spoke design for $900.
Apart from ruffling the likes of the A1 and Fiat 500's feathers, BMW Australia is appealing to younger buyers normally sizing up Asian offerings in the price range. Like other MINI models the Ray has a five-star safety rating, coming with six airbags and stability control.
"There are many MINI-lovers who, until now, may have felt MINI was out of their price range," said MINI Australia National Manager, David Woollcott.
Initially only 300 MINI Rays will be available to local buyers. The cars arrive in showrooms next week.
