The bigger and more advanced fourth-generation 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander will be priced between $34,490 and $49,990 (plus on-road costs) when it arrives late this year, representing an increase of between $2000 and $4500 over the outgoing equivalent models.
Scheduled to arrive in showrooms during November, the Outlander range slims down from 12 to nine models at launch – not including plug-in hybrid variants, which come later – and will again be offered in either five- or seven-seat layouts with the choice of two-wheel drive and AWD, but without a price-leading smaller-engined petrol manual at the entry level.
Hoping to improve its standing in the top-selling mid-size SUV segment, where the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 dominate, the new Mitsubishi Outlander is pitched as a more luxurious, more spacious and more intelligent vehicle than its predecessor.
There are now five model grades – ES, LS, Aspire (new), Exceed and Exceed Tourer (new) – and all come standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto smartphone mirroring, a 9.0-inch central touch-screen, dual-zone climate control and a 7.0-inch digital driver’s display, plus front and rear parking sensors.
A total of eight airbags, including a centre front airbag, is also fitted standard, along with lane departure prevention, lane change alert with brake assist, adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking (AEB).
If you want things like a wireless phone charger, powered tailgate and automatic headlights, you’ll need to step up to the LS grade, while higher-spec Outlanders (Aspire and above) get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.8-inch full-colour head-up display.
See below for a detailed equipment list for each Outlander variant, where you’ll see that top-spec models also bring features like massaging front seats with premium leather upholstery, a panoramic glass roof and a Bose sound system.
The seven-seat layout is standard on all grades except the entry-level ES, which has the third row available for an extra $1000.
A diesel engine will no longer be available in Australia on the Mitsubishi Outlander, but the fourth generation does bring a new 135kW/245Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine to the fore.
It pairs with an eight-speed continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with sports mode and steering wheel shift paddles.
Fuel consumption is rated at 7.5L/100km for base-grade 2WD models, rising to 8.1L/100km for the fully-loaded AWD Exceed variants. These figures mean it will be comparable with 2.5-litre versions of the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4.
The new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (plug-in hybrid) variants will join the range in early 2022.
There’s also talk of a high-performance Outlander Evo hero model, which could become the first sporty vehicle tuned by Mitsubishi’s resurrected Ralliart hot shop.
In terms of size, the new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is slightly longer and wider and rides on a new platform that, like the 2.5-litre engine, will be shared with the next Nissan X-TRAIL due in 2022.
Expect a more spacious interior as the wheelbase increases by 36mm to 2706mm, while overall length is now 4710mm (+15mm), width 1862mm (+51mm) and height 1748mm (+38mm).
Boot space is rated at 485 litres, expanding to 1471 litres with the rear seats folded down in the five-seat model, which comes with a full-size spare wheel. Seven-seaters get a space-saver spare and offer 478L, increasing to 1461L with the second and third row seats folded.
There are also significant changes to the Outlander’s steering, to make it more responsive, along with stiffer chassis and bigger brakes. Read our Mitsubishi Outlander global reveal story for the full deep-dive on the technical specifications.
Seven colours will be available: White, Sterling Silver, Titanium, Cosmic Blue, White Diamond, Black
Diamond and Red Diamond. Exceed Tourer models are offered with unique two-tone body and roof colours: Deep Bronze/Black Diamond and Black Mica/White Diamond.
All Outlander SUVs are covered by a class-leading 10-year/200,000km warranty (with conditions) along with 10 years’ capped-price servicing. Roadside assistance is offered for up to four years.
