New Mustang: Ford springs convertible surprise

Ford's Mk6 Mustang emerges in coupe and convertible form overnight

Ford not only showed its all-new Mustang coupe for the first time globally last night, but the next Mustang convertible also made its world debut amid much fanfare.

In fact, the redesigned convertible was the only new Mustang to appear in Sydney last night, when Ford staged simultaneous global reveals of its sixth-generation pony car in Australia, the US, Spain and China.

Ford Motor Company CEO Alan Mulally (pictured) lifted the lid on the all-new Mustang coupe and convertible in New York’s Times Square and the event was screened live on the Good Morning America TV show.

Ford says its new Mustang, which goes on sale in Australia in 2015, presents a sophisticated new design inspired by 50 years of heritage and will deliver world-class levels of performance.

Along with a range-topping 5.0-litre V8 version, the Mustang’s first four-cylinder engine (a 2.3-litre turbo EcoBoost unit) will be offered in Australia, potentially priced from under $45,000.
